Because they discovered who he had done it to.

Amara hated that.

She hated the silence before the reveal.

She hated the phones becoming braver after the screen changed.

She hated Charles’s apology arriving only after status.

Most of all, she hated that part of herself had expected exactly this.

Charles tried again.

“Amara.”

She looked up sharply.

“You may address me as Ms. Carter.”

He swallowed.

“Ms. Carter.”

“Yes?”

“I acted badly.”

She waited.

“I apologize.”

“For?”

Charles looked at Maya.

“For upsetting your daughter.”

Amara’s expression hardened.

“You didn’t upset her.”

Charles said nothing.

“You poured water on her.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

“Say it correctly.”

Sophie stood still.

Charles whispered:

“I poured water on your daughter.”

“And?”

“I should not have.”

“And?”

Charles’s jaw tightened.

Amara waited.

Finally:

“I should not have ordered you removed.”

“Why?”

Charles looked at the floor.

“Because your seat was valid.”

Amara leaned back.

“There.”

He looked up.

She continued.

“Not because I’m Chairwoman.”

“No.”

“Not because I control the voting shares.”

“No.”

“Not because tomorrow you report to a board I lead.”

Charles looked away.

Amara said:

“Because my ticket was valid.”

“Yes.”

“And even if it wasn’t?”

He hesitated.

Amara waited.

Charles finally understood the question.

“I should have verified it.”

“Without humiliating us.”

“Yes.”

Amara nodded once.

“Good.”

Then she looked toward Sophie.

“Please document everything exactly as it occurred.”

Charles stiffened.

“Amara—”

“Ms. Carter.”

He stopped.

She continued.

“No edits.”

“No private summary.”

“No executive rewrite.”

“Every action.”

“Every word.”

Sophie nodded.

“Yes, ma’am.”

Charles said:

“This should remain internal.”

Amara looked at the phones.

“That stopped being your decision.”

The flight continued.

Charles moved to another seat.

Not because Amara ordered him.

Because nobody wanted him standing there.

Maya eventually fell asleep.

Amara held her for nearly an hour.

Her dress remained damp across one shoulder.

Sophie offered a spare first-class sleep shirt.

Amara declined at first.

Then accepted because Maya’s clothes needed changing.
