He raised one hand.

“Do not.”

She stopped.

“You and him?”

“I’m sorry.”

The husband stared at her.

“When?”

She said nothing.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I need to understand.”

She whispered:

“It started after the company anniversary party.”

The husband remembered.

They had celebrated ten years in business.

His partner had given a speech.

He told everyone the husband was more than a colleague.

“My brother.”

That was the word.

Brother.

After the party, the husband had stayed late speaking with investors.

His wife left first.

His partner offered to drive her home.

The husband remembered thanking him.

“Take care of her for me.”

The memory almost made him sick.

He looked at his wife.

“That night?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“When?”

“A week later.”

“How?”

“He called.”

“Why did he have to call you?”

“He wanted to check on me.”

“About what?”

“You and I had argued.”

The husband froze.

“How did he know?”

She looked down.

“I told him.”

The husband stared.

“You were discussing our marriage with my business partner.”

“I needed someone to talk to.”

“You have friends.”

“He listened.”

The husband looked away.

Of course.

He listened.

The husband had been too busy.

His partner had not.

A betrayal often entered through whatever door neglect left unlocked.

That did not excuse who walked through.

But he understood the architecture of it now.

The wife continued.

“It wasn’t physical at first.”

The husband laughed bitterly.

“Thank you for that detail.”

“I’m trying to tell you the truth.”

“Seven months late.”

She flinched.

The husband looked at the phone.

“Did he come here?”

Silence.

The husband’s face changed.

“Did that man enter my house while I was gone?”

The wife began crying harder.

“Once.”

The husband closed his eyes.

Their sofa.

Their kitchen.

Their family photographs.

His daughter’s backpack by the door.

“Was our daughter home?”

“No.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

He opened his eyes.

“Do not lie.”

“She was at school.”

He nodded.

He did not know why that mattered.

It did.

Some invisible boundary had not been crossed.

At least not that one.

The husband looked toward the framed family photograph on the wall.

His business partner stood in that photograph too.

Christmas.

Two years earlier.

Smiling.

Arm around the husband’s shoulder.

The husband walked toward it.

He removed the frame.

His wife watched.

He looked at the photograph for several seconds.

Then placed it facedown on the table.

He did not smash it.

He wanted to.

But his daughter was upstairs.

The husband reached for his phone.

His wife stood.

“What are you doing?”

“Calling him.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“No?”

“Please don’t.”

“Why?”

“He doesn’t know you know.”

“Excellent.”

The wife moved closer.

“Wait.”
