The lie sounded terrible.

His daughter frowned.

“You look mad.”

“I’m not mad at you.”

“I know.”

She hugged the pillow tighter.

“Is Mom mad?”

The husband looked toward the staircase.

“I don’t know.”

Their daughter had begun asking questions like that more frequently.

Is Mom mad?

Are you mad?

Why are you sleeping in the guest room?

Why does Mom go out so much?

Why did you stop eating breakfast together?

He had always protected her from the answers.

Adults have stressful weeks.

Mom is busy.

Dad has an early meeting.

Everything is okay.

He had believed that keeping the truth away from her was the same as protecting her.

Now he wondered whether children could feel dishonesty even when they did not know the facts.

Footsteps came from upstairs.

The husband looked at the phone again.

He could lock it.

Put it back.

Pretend he had never seen anything.

Ask questions later.

Gather more evidence.

Think strategically.

Instead, he stood.

His wife came downstairs wearing tailored beige trousers and a black halter-style top.

Her dark hair was pulled into a sleek high bun.

Gold bracelets moved softly against her wrist as she adjusted one earring.

She looked elegant.

Controlled.

Beautiful.

He hated that he noticed.

She reached the last step.

Then saw the phone in his hand.

Her entire face changed.

Not dramatically.

A tiny pause.

Her shoulders went still.

Her eyes moved from his face to the screen.

That was enough.

The husband understood before she said a word.

She knew exactly what he had found.

He held up the phone.

“Who is this?”

His daughter stopped watching television.

The wife looked toward the sofa.

Then back at her husband.

“Why are you going through my phone?”

The question hit him with such force that he almost laughed.

He stared.

“That’s what you’re asking?”

“Lower your voice.”

“I haven’t raised it.”

“You’re upsetting her.”

The husband looked toward their daughter.

She was watching both of them now.

His voice softened automatically.

“Go upstairs for a minute, sweetheart.”

The girl did not move.

“Why?”

The wife answered quickly.

“Your father and I need to talk.”

The girl looked at her father.

His expression must have frightened her because she stood immediately.

She left the pillow behind and slowly climbed the stairs.

Halfway up, she turned.

“Are you getting divorced?”

The husband’s heart broke a little.

Neither parent answered.

Their daughter looked down.

Then continued upstairs.

A bedroom door closed.

The husband looked at his wife.

“You hear that?”

She folded her arms.

“This is not the place.”

“What place would you prefer?”

“Not in front of our child.”

“She already knows something is wrong.”

“She doesn’t know anything.”

“She knows enough to ask if we’re getting divorced.”

The wife looked away.

He held up the phone again.

“Tell me who this is.”

Her eyes came back to him.

“You’re jumping to conclusions.”

He unlocked the screen.

“Another man is calling my wife ‘baby.’”

Silence.

“He booked a hotel room.”

Nothing.

“He says he hates watching you come home to me.”

The wife swallowed.

The husband continued.

“You told him ‘soon.’”

Her jaw tightened.

“I can explain.”

He almost laughed.

“You actually said it.”

“What?”

“I can explain.”

His voice was low.

“People really say that.”

She glanced toward the staircase.

“Can we sit down?”

“No.”

“Please.”

“No.”
