That was a mistake.

The Fiancée followed his eyes.

Then laughed.

A single broken sound.

“You had to look at her before answering me.”

The man whispered:

“It isn’t like that.”

The Husband said:

“I recorded twenty seconds before coming downstairs.”

Everybody turned.

The Wife’s face changed.

“You recorded us?”

“Yes.”

“In our bedroom?”

He stared.

“Yes.”

She looked genuinely offended.

“You violated my privacy.”

The room became completely silent.

Then the first Betrayed Wife laughed.

Not happily.

Almost disbelieving.

“You cannot be serious.”

The Wife crossed her arms.

“This is still my home.”

The Husband answered:

“Not for long.”

She turned.

“What does that mean?”

He looked at her.

“The same thing it meant every time I told you I had boundaries.”

She shook her head.

“You’re upset.”

“No.”

“Yes, you are.”

“I’m finished.”

The words stopped her.

The Wife’s expression softened into something almost patronizing.

This was familiar territory to her.

She had seen him angry before.

Seen him disappointed.

Seen him sleep in the guest room.

Seen him say things were unacceptable.

Then days later, he would talk.

Listen.

Try again.

Forgive.

She smiled faintly.

“You’re not finished.”

The Husband looked at her.

“You always say that when you’re hurt.”

One of the Betrayed Wives stared at her.

The Wife continued.

“You calm down.”

The Husband said nothing.

“You forgive.”

Still nothing.

She stepped closer.

“You always forgive me.”

The Husband looked toward the kitchen trash.

Red roses.

Then back at her.

“Not tonight.”

The Wife’s smile vanished.

The first Betrayed Wife looked at her husband.

“Do you love her?”

“No.”

Immediate.

The Wife’s face changed.

The first Betrayed Wife continued:

“Did you sleep with her?”

The man glanced toward the Husband.

The Husband unlocked his phone.

“I have enough evidence.”

The man exhaled.

“Yes.”

His wife nodded once.

Then removed her wedding ring.

She placed it on the entry table.

He stared.

“Don’t do that.”

She looked at him.

“I drove here thinking maybe this man misunderstood.”

Her voice broke slightly.

“I spent the entire drive trying to invent an explanation for you.”

The Husband felt that sentence.

Because he had done the same thing when he saw the cars.

The Betrayed Wife continued.

“Then I walked through the door and saw your shirt.”

Her husband looked down.

Buttons misaligned.
