He walked downstairs.
No one noticed.
He placed the roses in the trash.
Then saw the key bowl beside the front door.
Three unfamiliar sets.
He picked them up.
For the first time that night, he knew exactly what he wanted to do.
Not hit anyone.
Not scream.
Not destroy property.
He wanted truth to become inconvenient.
He wanted nobody upstairs controlling the story afterward.
The Husband returned to the kitchen.
Opened his phone.
He knew one of the men.
Not personally.
The face looked familiar from the Wife’s corporate events.
A regional vendor.
The Husband searched.
Found him in photographs on his Wife’s company website.
Married.
He found the Wife’s social account.
Public.
Pictures with children.
The Husband stared at the screen.
Then located a number through a business directory.
He wrote:
I believe your husband is at my house with my wife. I have evidence. Come here now if you want to see it yourself. Do not call him first.
He attached the address.
Then the second man.
Different company.
Also married.
The third took longer.
The Husband searched his name after hearing the Wife say it upstairs.
Social media showed a fiancée.
Engagement photographs taken six months earlier.
The Husband found her through a shared professional page.
Three messages.
Sent.
Then he waited.
The first response came in less than one minute.
Who is this?
The Husband answered:
The homeowner whose bedroom he is currently in.
No response.
Then:
I’m coming.
The second woman called.
He declined.
Texted:
Please come in person. I do not want them warned.
She answered:
Twenty minutes.
The fiancée replied last.
This better not be a joke.
The Husband sent a still image from the video.
Three dots appeared.
Disappeared.
Returned.
Then:
I’m ten minutes away.
The Husband sat at the bottom of the staircase.
Keys in one hand.
Phone in the other.
His heartbeat had slowed.
Upstairs, the party continued for another four minutes.
Then the Wife called his phone.
The Husband stared at her name.
He answered.
“Hello?”
Her voice was falsely casual.
“Hey.”
“Hey.”
“How’s the conference?”
The Husband looked upstairs.
“Finished early.”
Silence.
Very brief.
Then:
“What?”
“I said it finished early.”
“Oh.”
He could hear movement above him now.
“Where are you?”
The Husband smiled without humor.
“Close enough.”
Silence.
Then panic.
Footsteps.
A man cursed.
Something hit the floor.
