“Clara!”

“Go!”

“What are you doing?”

She ran toward the internal berm.

Water nearly reached the top of her boots.

The hidden spillway should have opened thirty seconds ago.

Why had it not?

Sediment.

She realized.

The entrance had probably clogged beneath the packed soil.

Clara plunged the shovel into the soft section.

Harvey understood.

“You're going to cut it?”

“If it doesn't open now, outer wall goes!”

He ran toward her.

She screamed:

“Stay back!”

He ignored her.

Old farmers and young farmers shared at least one trait.

Poor obedience.

Harvey reached her.

“What do I do?”

Clara pointed.

“See that darker strip?”

“Yes.”

“Hit it!”

Both drove shovels into the mud.

The weakened soil collapsed partly.

Water entered.

Then stopped.

A limestone slab had shifted.

Blocked.

Clara dropped the shovel.

Reached into the rushing water.

Harvey grabbed her shoulder.

“Don't!”

She pushed deeper.

Her fingers found stone.

Too heavy.

“Help me!”

Harvey plunged both hands in.

Together they pulled.

The slab moved one inch.

Then two.

Water pressure caught beneath it.

The stone exploded sideways.

Harvey fell.

Clara dropped onto one knee.

And Basin Twelve opened.

The sound was enormous.

Not an explosion.

A deep tearing roar.

The sacrificial section collapsed inward.

Water disappeared into the opening.

For half a second, everyone thought the basin had failed.

Then muddy water erupted from the stone-lined spillway twenty feet to the east.

Not downhill.

Sideways.

Exactly sideways.

It split at a stone divider.

Three channels.

One toward Basin Thirteen.

One toward Fourteen.

One toward Fifteen.

Harvey sat in the mud staring.

Earl stopped halfway up the slope.

Tom turned.

Silas froze.

The cracked outer wall stopped leaking.

Pressure dropped.

The water level inside Twelve fell nearly a foot within seconds.

Harvey looked at Clara.

“You planned that?”

She was breathing too hard to answer.

The first surge entered Basin Thirteen.

Then Fourteen.

Then Fifteen.

Three basins filling together.

The emergency spread tripled discharge capacity.

The storm water slowed.

Harvey laughed.

Not mocking.

Disbelief.

“You crazy woman.”

Clara collapsed backward into the mud.

Then started laughing too.

Not because it was funny.

Because Basin Twelve had worked.

Rain continued.

The storm was not finished.

Clara stood again.

“Don't celebrate yet.”

Harvey stopped laughing.

“What now?”

“Sixteen.”

They moved.

By then, the four farmers were no longer spectators.

Earl cleared debris from Basin Seventeen.

Tom reinforced a low channel near Twenty-one with stones.

Silas used his truck rope to pull a fallen branch before it blocked Basin Twenty-four.

Harvey stayed with Clara.

Nobody discussed the irony.

No time.

The basin chain transformed as darkness approached.

Twenty.

Thirty.
