Reinforced.
Wide.
Ugly.
Critical.
The four farmers saw her face.
Harvey shouted from the fence:
“What?”
Clara did not answer.
He shouted again.
“Clara!”
She turned.
“Stay there!”
“What’s wrong?”
“Eleven's filling too fast!”
Earl called:
“Is that bad?”
“No, Earl, that's wonderful!”
Even during disaster, sarcasm survived.
The water in Eleven reached the lip.
The overflow channel became instantly full.
A thick brown stream rushed toward Twelve.
Clara ran beside it.
The channel walls held.
Water entered Basin Twelve.
The first impact struck the upstream berm and rolled backward.
Good.
The basin dispersed momentum.
More water entered.
Then more.
The level climbed.
Clara stood on the high side, breathing hard.
Harvey and the others had abandoned the fence again.
They came within thirty feet.
Harvey shouted:
“What's supposed to happen?”
“Normal overflow on the east!”
He pointed.
“Where?”
“There!”
A narrow stone-lined channel began releasing water.
Too little.
The inflow exceeded it badly.
The water kept climbing.
Silas said:
“You need another outlet.”
Clara stared.
“I have one.”
“Where?”
“Under the wall.”
They looked at her.
Tom shouted:
“Under?”
Harvey understood first.
“You built a blowout.”
“Emergency spill.”
“Same damn thing.”
“No.”
“If that wall opens—”
“It opens inward.”
“If.”
Clara looked toward him.
“Yes.”
If.
There was the entire summer compressed into one word.
If the sacrificial berm broke where intended.
If the spillway remained clear.
If stones beneath had not shifted.
If the outer wall held long enough.
If the hydraulic pressure matched the calculations.
If.
The water reached the emergency mark.
Nothing happened.
Clara’s stomach tightened.
Rain struck the surface so hard it looked like boiling mud.
The outer wall darkened.
Saturated.
Harvey took a step backward.
“Clara.”
She saw it.
A line.
Thin.
Across the outer berm.
Not the sacrificial section.
Wrong place.
Her blood went cold.
“No.”
The crack lengthened.
Six inches.
One foot.
Three.
Earl shouted:
“It's breaking!”
Harvey grabbed Clara’s arm.
“Move!”
She tore free.
“No!”
The crack widened.
Water seeped through.
Harvey shouted:
“Your whole damn hill's about to go!”
Clara drove the shovel into the mud.
“Everybody back!”
Tom was already moving uphill.
Silas followed.
Earl turned.
Harvey stayed.
