Their pickup trucks.
The dying plants.
“I know.”
“Do you?”
She nodded.
“Then open it.”
The Farm Girl turned the valve.
Water entered the main line.
They heard it before they saw anything.
A hollow metallic rumble.
Air moving.
Pipe shaking.
The father watched the first connection.
Held.
Second.
Held.
Third leaked.
Not badly.
They continued.
Water traveled downhill.
Gravity took over.
The sound deepened.
The Farm Girl ran beside the pipe.
Her father followed.
At the field entrance, the Neighbor Farmer crossed his arms.
“Well?”
The Farm Girl ignored him.
The line shuddered.
Nothing exited the first branch.
One man laughed.
“Swimming pool’s dry.”
The Farm Girl crouched.
Listened.
There was water inside.
She could hear it.
Why no flow?
Air lock?
Blocked valve?
She put both hands on the first branch wheel.
Turned.
Nothing.
The Farmer laughed louder.
The Farm Girl’s father stepped forward.
She shook her head.
She reset her feet.
Pulled harder.
The wheel moved.
Rust cracked.
The branch line jumped.
A deep clang traveled through the metal.
All laughter stopped.
The pipe trembled.
The Farm Girl stepped back.
Brown water coughed from the outlet.
Then stopped.
The Neighbor Farmer smiled.
“Is that—”
A surge hit.
Water exploded into the furrow.
Not a spray.
A thick moving stream.
It raced through dry soil.
Dust became mud.
The Farm Girl ran to the second branch.
Opened it.
Air blasted first.
Then water.
Third branch.
The valve fought her.
She pulled.
Her father joined.
Together they turned it.
Water entered the lower furrow.
The Farmer who had given her the pipe stared toward the ridge.
“There’s no pump.”
Nobody answered.
He looked toward the father.
“Where’s the pressure coming from?”
The father pointed uphill.
The old reservoir glittered between trees.
The Neighbor Farmer stared.
“You’re gravity-feeding this?”
The Farm Girl walked past him.
Her boots splashed through the first wet furrow.
“You gave me the pipes.”
She adjusted an outlet.
“You never asked what I found uphill.”
The men stopped smiling.
That should have been the triumphant moment.
In stories told later, people often made it one.
A child opens a valve.
