“I looked over after the cruiser stopped.”

“Maggie knew you.”

Wilson waved one hand.

“Of course she knew us.”

“So why would somebody tell police strangers were at the house?”

Wilson stopped.

The question remained.

Darwin asked:

“Any disputes?”

“Nothing serious.”

Tessa looked at her husband.

“The sale.”

Wilson frowned.

Darwin noticed.

“What sale?”

“Development company.”

Wilson dismissed it.

“They’ve been buying houses.”

“We said no.”

“Maggie asked twice.”

“Three times,” Tessa corrected.

Darwin leaned forward.

“Does she work for them?”

“Not that I know.”

Tessa looked uncertain.

“That doesn’t mean no.”

Darwin stayed awake after his parents went to bed.

He walked the property.

Checked doors.

Cameras.

Windows.

Habit.

At midnight, he stood on the porch and looked toward Maggie’s dark house.

Nothing moved.

He told himself the incident was over.

Across town, Officer Blake Campbell sat beneath fluorescent lights inside a nearly empty precinct.

An incident report glowed on his screen.

The cursor blinked.

He stared at it.

The truth would be easy.

Responded to suspicious-person call.

Residents identified themselves.

Confusion occurred regarding request for ID.

Physical contact initiated by officer.

Adult son approached.

No arrest.

No weapons.

No injuries beyond possible bruising.

End.

Campbell imagined that report being reviewed.

Imagined the phones.

White’s apology.

Darwin standing over him.

The trident.

The humiliation.

Then he started typing something else.

Subject Wilson Harbison became verbally confrontational and attempted to move toward residence after repeated lawful commands to remain stationary.

Campbell paused.

Then continued.

Subject Darwin Harbison exited residence and rapidly advanced toward officer in an aggressive manner.

Another pause.

Officer reasonably feared imminent physical attack due to subject’s size, posture, clenched fists, and refusal to obey commands.

Darwin’s fists had never been clenched.

Campbell typed it anyway.

Taser displayed but not deployed.

True.

No unnecessary force used.

False.

Then the body-camera section.

Campbell looked toward the docking station.

His camera had been running.

He knew it.

He had turned it on when exiting the cruiser.

It contained everything.

His contradictory commands.

The grab.

Tessa’s shove.

Darwin’s open hands.

White telling him to stand down.

Campbell’s fingers hovered over the keyboard.

Then:

BODY CAMERA FAILURE. FILE CORRUPTED DURING UPLOAD.

He submitted the report.

Afterward, he walked to Chief Morgan Dash’s office.

Dash was still there.

Fifty-eight.

Thick gray hair.

Heavy face.

Campbell’s uncle.

The man who had helped him join the department.

The man who had explained early:

“Police work is messy. Paper makes it understandable.”

Campbell closed the office door.

Dash looked up.

“What?”
