Campbell suddenly understood the image.

He holstered the taser.

Then turned toward Wilson.

“This got out of hand.”

Wilson stared.

Campbell continued.

“Miscommunication.”

Tessa whispered:

“You grabbed him.”

Campbell ignored her.

Darwin said:

“You shoved my mother.”

Campbell looked toward the teenager recording.

Then at the other phones.

“I said it was a misunderstanding.”

Darwin’s voice stayed low.

“No.”

“That’s what you called it.”

Campbell's face flushed.

White touched his elbow.

“Let’s go.”

For one moment, Campbell looked ready to argue.

Then he walked toward the cruiser.

White remained.

He looked at Wilson.

“Sir.”

Wilson waited.

White swallowed.

“I’m sorry.”

Campbell heard.

“White.”

The younger officer looked toward his partner.

Then back at Wilson.

“I’m sorry.”

He returned to the vehicle.

The cruiser left.

Nobody on the street moved immediately.

Wilson stood beside the porch rubbing his arm.

Tessa touched his face.

“You okay?”

He nodded.

Then shook his head.

“No.”

Darwin crouched beside him.

“Let me see.”

“I’m fine.”

“Dad.”

Wilson allowed him to examine the arm.

Darwin’s jaw tightened.

Finger-shaped bruising.

Tessa sat on the porch step.

Her hands shook.

Across the street, Maggie let the curtain fall.

For the first time since dialing 911, she felt something close to fear.

Not guilt.

Consequences.

Inside the Harbison house that evening, nobody spoke much over dinner.

Tessa had cooked chicken.

Rice.

Greens.

Wilson barely touched his plate.

Darwin watched him.

“Arm?”

“No.”

“Chest?”

Wilson looked up.

“How did you know?”

“You keep rubbing it.”

Tessa immediately turned.

“Wilson.”

“It’s stress.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I’m fine.”

Darwin leaned back.

“Dad.”

Wilson exhaled.

“Just tight.”

Tessa began to stand.

“No hospital.”

“Wilson.”

“I said no hospital.”

Darwin looked at him for several seconds.

“Then if it happens again, you don’t get a vote.”

Wilson almost smiled.

“Bossy.”

“Learned from you.”

After dinner, Tessa returned to the morning.

“Maggie was watching.”

Wilson looked over.

“She watches everything.”

“No.”

Tessa shook her head.

“She was already at the window before police came.”

Darwin’s eyes narrowed.

“How do you know?”
