“Hands where I can see them.”
“They are.”
Campbell closed the distance.
Wilson did not move.
“Turn around.”
“For what?”
Campbell grabbed his upper arm.
Hard.
Wilson winced.
“Officer.”
“Turn around.”
“You’re hurting me.”
Tessa stood so quickly the garden stool fell.
“Let go of my husband.”
Campbell twisted Wilson’s arm backward.
Wilson’s knees bent under the pressure.
“I said turn around.”
“He didn’t do anything!”
Tessa rushed closer.
Campbell shoved his free hand outward.
“Back up.”
His palm struck Tessa near the shoulder.
She stumbled.
Her hip hit the porch railing.
Wilson’s fear became anger.
“Don’t touch my wife.”
Campbell tightened his grip.
“Then stop resisting.”
“I’m not resisting.”
“Stop pulling away.”
“You’re twisting my arm.”
Doors opened along the street.
A neighbor stepped onto a porch.
Then another.
A teenage boy on a bicycle stopped at the curb.
His phone appeared immediately.
Maggie remained behind her curtain.
Watching.
Tessa regained her footing.
Her face had changed.
Fear now.
Not for herself.
For Wilson.
“Please.”
She approached again but kept both hands visible.
“He lives here.”
“Ma’am, back away.”
“This is our house.”
“I said back away.”
Campbell shoved her again.
Less force this time.
Enough.
Tessa looked toward the front door.
Darwin.
Her son had arrived three days earlier.
He was asleep upstairs after staying awake most of the night talking with Wilson.
He had come home expecting quiet.
Family.
Food.
Nothing more.
Tessa screamed.
“Darwin!”
Campbell looked toward the house.
“Ma’am.”
“Darwin!”
The front door opened.
A large man appeared in the doorway.
He was thirty-six.
Six-foot-four.
Massive through the shoulders and chest.
Short black hair.
Trim beard.
He wore dark sweatpants and a sleeveless charcoal hoodie.
His eyes went immediately to his father.
Then the officer.
Then his mother holding the railing.
Darwin moved.
Fast.
Not running.
Controlled.
He came down the porch steps.
Campbell released Wilson and pivoted.
His hand dropped toward his taser.
“Stop right there.”
Darwin kept walking.
“That’s my father.”
“Stop.”
Darwin slowed.
Three yards away.
Then two.
Campbell pulled the taser halfway from its holster.
“I will drop you.”
Darwin stopped.
Hands open.
Visible.
