Just shock.

Heat.

Impact.

His left shoulder throbbed.

The officer stared at him.

Breathing hard.

The expression on his face said he had expected something.

A punch.

A shove.

A charge.

Anything that would transform what he had just done into a fight between two men.

The Black homeowner gave him nothing.

He stood upright.

Hands down.

Breathing slowly.

His wife started toward him.

He raised one hand.

Not yet.

The officer stepped closer.

“Yeah.”

“That’s what I thought.”

The homeowner looked at him.

Calm.

Too calm.

That seemed to unsettle the officer more than anger would have.

The second officer finally moved.

“What the hell are you doing?”

The lead officer turned.

“Back off.”

“You hit him.”

“He moved toward me.”

“No, he didn't.”

The words echoed.

Every phone captured them.

The lead officer’s eyes widened.

“You taking his side?”

“I’m saying what happened.”

The lead officer pointed toward his partner.

“You shut your mouth.”

The homeowner reached toward the table.

The lead officer snapped around.

“Hands!”

The homeowner stopped.

“I’m getting my towel.”

“Leave it.”

The homeowner slowly lowered his hand.

His cheek still burned.

His daughter had begun crying.

That was harder to tolerate than the pain.

His wife crouched beside her.

The homeowner looked at the officer.

“Are you done?”

The officer’s mouth opened.

Before he could answer, someone knocked against the backyard gate.

Hard.

Three times.

Everyone turned.

The lead officer looked irritated.

“Who’s that?”

Nobody answered.

The gate opened.

A Black police captain in formal command uniform stepped through.

Behind him came two senior officers.

Then a plainclothes investigator.

The entire atmosphere changed instantly.

The second officer straightened.

The lead officer froze.

The captain looked across the yard.

Food on the ground.

Metal grate in the grass.

Children crying.

Phones raised.

The homeowner standing beside the damaged table.

Then he looked at the lead officer.

No one spoke.

The captain walked forward.

Slowly.

His eyes moved to the Black homeowner’s cheek.

Then to the grill.

Then to the officer’s gloved hand.

“What happened?”

The lead officer found his voice.

“Sir, we responded to a disturbance and the subject became aggressive.”

The second officer looked toward him.

The captain noticed.

The Black homeowner remained silent.

The captain turned toward him.

“Are you injured?”

“Not seriously.”

The captain nodded once.

Then looked toward the lead officer.

“Subject?”

The officer swallowed.

“Yes, sir.”

The captain’s eyes hardened.

“You called him the subject?”

The officer glanced toward the homeowner.

Then back.

“Sir, I didn’t know.”

The captain stepped closer.

“That sentence is already a problem.”

The officer looked confused.

The captain pointed toward the homeowner.

“Do you know who this man is?”

The lead officer stared.

The homeowner did not help him.

The captain continued.
