Fifth.

Middle-aged white woman.

Parking dispute.

Officer accused of unnecessary shouting.

Camera showed both parties shouting.

Complaint unfounded.

Again, important.

Patterns require honesty.

You cannot build accountability by pretending every accusation is true.

The incoming commander read everything again.

His swollen cheek made it difficult to remain emotionally distant.

He tried anyway.

At 8:15, the captain called.

“Sleep?”

“Some.”

“You?”

“None.”

“What happened?”

“Lead officer placed on administrative leave.”

“Expected.”

“Younger officer temporarily reassigned pending review.”

The commander paused.

“Why reassigned?”

“He was present.”

“Presence isn't automatically misconduct.”

“I know.”

“Review first.”

The captain sighed.

“You’re already making my morning difficult.”

“Get used to it.”

That almost sounded normal.

The captain continued.

“We pulled dispatch.”

“Noise complaint came from anonymous caller.”

“Can you trace it?”

“System captured number.”

“And?”

“Prepaid mobile.”

“Any connection to neighborhood?”

“Unknown.”

The commander leaned back.

“Could be real.”

“Yes.”

“Don't assume otherwise.”

“Agreed.”

The captain continued.

“More important.”

“Lead officer's body camera was manually disabled before arriving.”

The commander’s expression hardened.

“Timestamp?”

“Nine minutes before dispatch.”

“So not related to me.”

“Correct.”

That mattered.

He had disabled recording before knowing where he was going.

Potentially worse.

“Reason?”

“Says accidental.”

“Previous manual disables?”

“Professional Standards is checking.”

“Good.”

The captain hesitated.

“There’s another thing.”

“What?”

“Patrol GPS.”

The commander waited.

“Unit did not respond directly to your address.”

“They spent eleven minutes parked two blocks away.”

“Before entering your property.”

The commander frowned.

“Doing what?”

“No dispatch traffic.”

“No documented activity.”

“Nearby camera footage?”

“Requesting.”

The commander looked toward the complaint file.

The story was becoming larger.

He did not like it.

Complexity attracts assumptions.

He wanted facts.

“Captain.”

“Yes?”

“No press.”

“Already getting calls.”

“No comment beyond administrative review underway.”

“Agreed.”

“No mention of my position.”

“Too late.”

“How?”

“Guests posted video.”

Of course.

The internet had already done what the internet does.

By 9:00 a.m., one clip had hundreds of thousands of views.

By noon, millions.

COP HITS BLACK MAN AT BBQ THEN FINDS OUT WHO HE IS

The commander hated the title.

His daughter found it fascinating.

“Dad, you're famous.”

“No.”

“You have three million views.”

“That is not fame.”

“What is it?”

“A problem.”

She frowned.

“People like you.”

“They don't know me.”

“They hate the officer.”
