Immediate justice.

A satisfying visual.

The homeowner did not.

Justice built around satisfying visuals becomes dangerous quickly.

His wife understood.

Later that evening, after everyone left, they sat on the back steps.

The grill had gone cold.

He held an ice pack against his cheek.

His wife leaned beside him.

“You scared me.”

“I know.”

“No.”

“You don't.”

She looked at him.

“When he hit you, I thought…”

She stopped.

The homeowner lowered the ice pack.

“What?”

“I thought you were going to become exactly what he wanted.”

He nodded.

“So did I.”

She looked surprised.

“You wanted to hit him?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

He smiled faintly.

“Enough.”

She laughed once.

Then covered her face.

“That is not funny.”

“No.”

“It isn't.”

Their daughter opened the back door.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Can Dad still barbecue tomorrow?”

The homeowner laughed.

His wife shouted:

“No!”

Their daughter smiled and disappeared inside.

The homeowner looked toward the cold grill.

“Apparently suspended.”

“Indefinitely.”

“You don't have authority.”

“I’m your wife.”

“That sounds like authority.”

“Correct.”

They sat quietly.

Then she said:

“You knew something was wrong the second they came in.”

“Yes.”

“Because of the complaint review?”

“Partly.”

“You think he knew you?”

“No.”

“Then why us?”

“I don't think it was us.”

She frowned.

“What does that mean?”

He looked toward the fence.

“I think this is how he handles people when he thinks nobody important is watching.”

That frightened her more than if the answer had been personal.

The next morning, the homeowner woke before six.

Habit.

His cheek was swollen.

He showered.

Made coffee.

Then went into his home office.
