The baton came down before the Black Man finished his sentence.

The driver-side window of the matte-black Lamborghini exploded inward.

Tempered glass burst across the black leather seat, scattered over the center console, and sprayed against the driver’s shoulder.

For half a second, the entire boulevard seemed to freeze.

Then the Police Officer shouted.

“OUT OF THE CAR!”

The Black Man turned his face away from the falling glass.

He did not reach for the door.

He did not reach for the glove compartment.

He did not reach toward his jacket.

He kept both hands where the Officer could see them.

One on the steering wheel.

One raised slowly beside his head.

“Officer, listen to me.”

The Officer jammed one arm through the shattered window.

“UNLOCK IT!”

“The door is already—”

The Officer found the interior handle.

Pulled.

The door swung open.

Traffic moved slowly around them on the four-lane boulevard, drivers staring through windows as they passed.

A city bus had stopped thirty yards behind the patrol cruiser.

Several passengers were already holding phones against the glass.

The Black Man spoke again.

“My identification is inside my jacket.”

The Officer grabbed the front of his fitted black polo shirt.

“I don’t care what you have.”

Then he pulled.

Hard.

The Black Man’s shoulder struck the door frame.

His left foot caught briefly beneath the steering column.

The Officer yanked again.

“OUT!”

The Black Man allowed himself to be dragged forward rather than fight against the grip.

His boots hit pavement.

The Officer immediately twisted his right arm behind him and drove him chest-first against the Lamborghini.

The impact rocked the vehicle.

The side mirror folded inward.

Glass crunched beneath their shoes.

“Hands behind your back.”

“My hands are visible.”

“NOW!”

The Officer grabbed his other wrist.

The Black Man’s jaw tightened.

He was forty-two.

Six feet two.

Athletic.

Strong enough that, physically, the Officer would have had a much harder afternoon if the Black Man had decided to resist.

He did not.

That was not fear.

It was calculation.

The Black Man had spent almost eighteen years learning that the difference between control and force was often a fraction of a second.

A bad movement.

A misunderstood reach.

An angry reaction.

One moment could turn evidence into chaos.

So he stayed still.

The Officer pushed him harder against the Lamborghini.

“Where’d you get the car?”

The Black Man looked sideways.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

The Officer reached for his handcuffs.

“This yours?”

“Yes.”

The Officer laughed.

Not because something was funny.

Because he had already decided the answer was impossible.

“Sure it is.”

The Black Man’s eyes hardened.

“Registration is in the center console.”

“I didn’t ask you where the fake paperwork is.”

“There is no fake paperwork.”

“Then why’d you refuse to get out?”

“I didn’t.”

The Officer tightened his grip.

“You argued.”

“I told you where my identification was.”

The cuffs came free.

Metal opened.

The Black Man felt the first cuff close around his right wrist.

One click.

Two.

Three.

Too tight.

He inhaled slowly.

“Before you close the second cuff, check my jacket.”

The Officer leaned closer.
