“And I told you not to open it.”

The officer stared.

The driver stopped.

Hands visible.

No threat.

The officer opened the folder anyway.

Inside were travel documents.

Identification.

Orders.

Letters.

A sealed envelope intended for delivery the following morning.

The officer read the first page.

Then the second.

The color began leaving his face.

“Senior Chief?”

The driver said nothing.

The officer’s eyes moved toward the shoulder insignia on the folded uniform.

Then back to the official identification.

“Terrence Dawson.”

The driver looked at him.

“You already had my name from my license.”

The officer closed the folder.

His voice changed slightly.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

The driver’s eyebrows lifted.

“Tell you what?”

“Who you are.”

“I told you my name.”

“You know what I mean.”

Terrence looked toward the scattered contents of his pickup.

“No.”

“I don’t.”

The officer stared.

A vehicle approached from behind.

Headlights.

Then another.

Not ordinary cars.

Two dark SUVs with government plates slowed behind the patrol cruiser.

The officer looked back.

Both vehicles pulled onto the shoulder.

Doors opened.

Several uniformed personnel stepped out.

The officer’s posture stiffened.

One man looked toward Terrence.

Recognition was immediate.

He walked forward.

Stopped several feet away.

Then saluted.

“Senior Chief.”

Terrence returned it.

The officer stood beside the open truck door holding the folder he had just removed from Terrence’s bag.

The arriving man looked toward him.

Then at the uniform on the running board.

Then at Terrence.

“What happened?”

Terrence answered calmly.

“Traffic stop.”

The officer spoke quickly.

“He crossed the center line.”

Terrence looked at him.

The officer continued.

“And I had safety concerns regarding a weapon in the vehicle.”

The arriving man looked toward the locked case.

Then toward the officer.

“Was the weapon secured?”

“Yes.”

“Did he tell you it was there?”

“Yes.”

Terrence added:

“When asked.”

The officer’s eyes moved toward him.

Terrence looked at the folder in the officer’s hand.

“Return that.”

The officer did.

Immediately.

No argument now.

Terrence took it.

Placed it back inside the travel bag.

Folded the uniform carefully.

One sleeve had touched the dusty running board.

He brushed it clean with his hand.

The officer watched.

Terrence said nothing.

That silence became heavier than shouting.

The arriving personnel remained nearby.

The officer cleared his throat.

“Senior Chief, I think maybe we got off on the wrong foot.”

Terrence looked up.

“We?”

The officer hesitated.

“I mean this situation.”

“You stopped me.”

“Yes.”

“You said I crossed the center line.”

“Yes.”

“You searched my truck after I refused consent.”

The officer’s face tightened.

“I had probable cause.”

“For what?”

“The weapon.”

Terrence looked toward the other men.

Then back.

“A secured firearm that I voluntarily disclosed.”

The officer’s confidence flickered.

“Officer safety.”
