“Stay by the hood.”
“I said I don’t consent.”
“I heard you.”
The officer reached inside.
The driver’s voice hardened.
“Do not search my truck.”
The officer opened the center console.
“Stay where you are.”
The driver stared.
“What is your legal basis?”
The officer pulled out a charging cable.
Receipts.
A pack of gum.
He dropped everything onto the seat.
“You admitted there is a weapon in the vehicle.”
“A secured legal firearm does not give you permission to search my belongings.”
The officer looked toward him.
“Are you telling me police procedure now?”
“I’m telling you I do not consent.”
The officer opened the glove compartment wider.
Registration papers slid onto the floor.
The driver’s jaw tightened.
He did not move.
The officer pushed deeper.
Nothing.
Then he stepped around the cab and opened the rear door.
The driver turned fully.
“You are searching without my permission.”
The officer ignored him.
He pulled out a folded sweater.
Small toiletry bag.
A shoebox.
He tossed the sweater onto the front seat.
The driver’s voice sharpened.
“Put my property back.”
The officer looked over his shoulder.
“Keep arguing.”
He pulled the dark travel bag toward him.
“You’re only making yourself look worse.”
The driver’s eyes fixed on the bag.
“Do not open that.”
The officer smiled.
There.
Finally.
A reaction.
“Something important?”
The driver said nothing.
The officer set the bag on the running board.
Heavy zipper.
He pulled.
The bag opened.
Inside were carefully folded clothes.
Dark fabric.
White fabric.
A pair of highly polished shoes protected in cloth bags.
The officer pushed his hand inside.
He removed one folded item.
Then another.
The driver’s face remained expressionless.
The officer looked at him.
“Going somewhere formal?”
“No answer?”
He dug deeper.
His hand stopped.
Something inside felt different.
Heavy fabric.
Structured.
He pulled.
A carefully folded dark dress uniform emerged from the bag.
The officer frowned.
He unfolded part of it.
Insignia caught the cruiser lights.
His expression shifted.
Small at first.
Then visibly.
The driver watched.
The officer looked toward him.
Then back at the uniform.
“What is this?”
The driver answered calmly.
“You opened it.”
The officer ignored the remark.
He reached deeper into the bag.
A sealed folder.
Dark blue.
The officer pulled it out.
A photograph was visible beneath a transparent protective sleeve.
The driver’s face.
Formal identification.
Official credentials.
The officer’s breathing changed.
He looked again.
Then at the driver.
His confidence did not disappear completely.
Not yet.
But something had cracked.
“What exactly do you do?”
The driver answered:
“Put my property back.”
The officer’s eyes returned to the folder.
He started opening it.
The driver took one step forward.
“Do not open that folder.”
The officer’s right hand moved toward his belt.
“I told you to stay at the hood.”
