Because people were boarding and twelve-year-old girls were supposed to be embarrassed by fathers who hugged too long.

He had whispered:

“Stay buckled, stargazer.”

She had smiled.

“Go fly the airplane.”

Then he had disappeared behind the cockpit door.

Now she stared toward it.

For one second, all she wanted was him.

But she knew enough about flying to understand why she could not have him.

Not yet.

The Captain sat in the left seat with both hands relaxed near the controls.

Outside the windshield, the sky was an enormous blue field.

Below them, the Rockies stretched white and jagged beneath broken cloud.

Flight 101 had been smooth since departure.

Good weather.

Normal routing.

Normal traffic.

The Captain preferred boring flights.

Passengers sometimes imagined pilots wanted excitement.

They did not.

A successful flight was one in which almost nothing memorable happened.

The First Officer checked a frequency.

The Captain reviewed the next waypoint.

Routine.

Professional.

Predictable.

Exactly how he liked it.

Especially today.

Because his daughter was on board.

He had almost refused.

She had begged for weeks.

She wanted to see the mountains from altitude.

Wanted to watch sunrise over Seattle.

Wanted to experience a flight where her father was the one in command.

The Captain had finally agreed after arranging everything carefully.

Confirmed seat.

Medical information updated.

Emergency contact attached.

Crew notified that an unaccompanied minor linked to the flight deck would be aboard.

He hated the phrase.

Unaccompanied minor.

She was not unaccompanied.

He was thirty yards away.

A reinforced cockpit door simply made thirty yards feel like another world.

The Captain looked at the clock.

Two hours to Dallas.

His daughter was probably asleep.

She always slept on airplanes despite claiming she wanted to look at the sky.

He smiled faintly.

The First Officer noticed.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Daughter?”

The Captain glanced over.

“Maybe.”

The First Officer grinned.

“You checked on her before takeoff four times.”

“Three.”

“Four.”

“One was operational.”

“Sure.”

The Captain shook his head.

Then the cockpit emergency chime sounded.

The smile disappeared.

The First Officer answered immediately.

“Flight deck.”

Silence.

The First Officer listened.

His posture changed.

The Captain noticed before any words were spoken.

“What?”

The First Officer raised one finger.

Kept listening.

Then turned toward him.

His face had lost color.

“Captain.”

The Captain felt something cold enter his chest.

“What is it?”

“Medical emergency.”

The Captain’s mind shifted instantly into procedure.

“Location?”

“Row 12.”

The cold became ice.

“What passenger?”

The First Officer did not answer quickly enough.

The Captain’s voice sharpened.

“What passenger?”

“Twelve-year-old female.”

The Captain looked at him.

“Identify.”

The First Officer swallowed.

“It’s your daughter.”

For one second, the cockpit ceased to exist.

No instruments.

No radios.

No sky.

No airplane.

Only those three words.
