“No.”

“Does my calm prove innocence?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Then he told them who he was.

The reaction resembled what happened on the driveway months earlier.

Malcolm waited for it to settle.

“That reaction is why I waited.”

The room became quiet.

“My title did not change the video.”

He looked toward Cole.

“It did not change the distance between us.”

Then toward everyone.

“It did not change what she said on the 911 call.”

He paused.

“And it should not change what you think my rights were before you learned my name.”

Nobody moved.

Malcolm continued.

“If the only lesson you take from what happened to me is ‘be careful because the person you stop might secretly be important,’ then you have learned the worst possible lesson.”

Cole lowered his eyes.

Malcolm’s voice remained calm.

“I was important before anyone knew my occupation.”

He let the sentence settle.

“So was Mrs. Whitmore. That is why her claim deserved investigation rather than dismissal.”

Then:

“And so is the next person standing on a sidewalk who has no impressive title at all.”

Afterward Cole waited until the auditorium emptied.

Malcolm saw him approaching.

“Judge Greer.”

“Officer.”

Cole looked uncomfortable.

“I owe you an apology.”

Malcolm waited.

“I thought I was protecting a victim.”

“That part was your job.”

Cole looked surprised.

Malcolm continued.

“The problem was deciding who the victim was before you finished checking.”

Cole nodded.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“I think so.”

Malcolm studied him.

“Then tell me.”

Cole took a breath.

“I treated her fear as evidence against you.”

Malcolm waited.

“I treated your calmness like it was suspicious.”

Another pause.

“And when I saw you standing there, I assumed you were the one who might become dangerous if the scene escalated.”

Malcolm asked:

“Why?”

Cole looked down.

“That’s the part I’ve had to think about.”

Malcolm nodded.

“That’s the part worth thinking about.”

He extended his hand.

Cole shook it.
