Evelyn snapped, “Stop telling the police how to do their jobs.”
Brooks looked at Malcolm.
“Why the call?”
“Because she told the dispatcher I was approaching her again.”
Brooks remembered hearing the call summary over radio. Female caller stating male neighbor struck her and was “still coming at her.”
Malcolm continued. “I was standing where you found me.”
Brooks nodded slowly.
“That would matter.”
Evelyn’s breathing became quicker.
She stepped toward Malcolm.
Brooks immediately moved between them.
“Mrs. Whitmore, stay where you are.”
“He’s manipulating this.”
“Stay there.”
“I know people in this city.”
Brooks’s face did not change.
“That doesn’t affect what I’m asking you to do.”
Evelyn pointed past her. “He thinks because he has some education and a nice house he can make everyone else look stupid.”
Malcolm said quietly, “I haven’t said anything about my education.”
“Because you don’t need to. You walk around here like you’re better than everyone.”
Marisol laughed once.
“Malcolm?”
Evelyn turned on her.
“Yes, Malcolm.”
Marisol shook her head. “The man apologizes to furniture when he bumps into it.”
Even Cole almost smiled.
Then a third police vehicle entered the street.
Sergeant Elena Ruiz stepped out.
She had been dispatched because the incident had shifted from an alleged neighborhood battery to a possible false report involving conflicting digital evidence. Ruiz had spent sixteen years with the department, six as a supervisor, and had learned that scenes became most dangerous when people assumed the interesting part was already over.
She approached Brooks first.
“What do we have?”
Brooks summarized.
Alleged slap.
No independent eyewitness.
Victim statement contradicted by doorbell footage.
911 timing potentially inconsistent.
Initial detention of Malcolm.
No injury requiring treatment.
Possible prior neighborhood dispute.
Ruiz listened without interrupting.
Then she looked toward Malcolm.
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
Not suspiciously.
Recognizing something.
She walked closer.
“Sir, may I see your identification?”
Malcolm handed it over.
Ruiz read the name.
Then looked at his face again.
For the first time since arriving, her professional expression slipped.
“Judge Greer?”
The entire driveway seemed to stop.
Cole looked at Malcolm.
Brooks looked at Ruiz.
Marisol closed her eyes as though she had been expecting this problem eventually.
Evelyn whispered, “What?”
Malcolm’s jaw tightened slightly.
“Sergeant.”
