Cold water poured over Amara’s head.

It hit her hair first.

Then shoulders.

Then gray uniform.

Ice cubes struck the floor.

One bounced against the leg of a leather chair.

Another slid beneath the conference table.

The room froze.

Richard held the empty pitcher above her for another second.

Then lowered it.

Water streamed from Amara’s long dark-brown hair.

Down her cheeks.

Across her collar.

Her shirt darkened.

Her sleeves clung to her arms.

She did not blink.

Richard smiled.

Not broadly.

A tight, angry smile.

“There.”

He pointed toward the floor.

“Now it's dirty.”

Nobody spoke.

Amara looked down.

Water spread across the carpet.

Ice scattered around her shoes.

Then she looked back at Richard.

His breathing had quickened.

He expected something.

Tears.

Anger.

Shouting.

Maybe fear.

She gave him none.

The HR representative whispered:

“Oh my God.”

A finance executive stood.

“Richard, what the hell?”

Richard snapped:

“Sit down.”

The executive did not.

“You just poured water on her.”

“She was insubordinate.”

“That doesn't mean—”

“I said sit down.”

The man remained standing.

Another executive quietly lifted a phone.

Richard saw.

“Put that away.”

The executive kept recording.

Richard pointed.

“This is a confidential board meeting.”

The executive replied:

“This isn't about the meeting anymore.”

Good.

Amara remembered that too.

Richard turned back toward her.

“Clean it.”

Amara said nothing.

“I said clean it.”

She slowly reached up.

Pushed wet hair away from her face.

Then:

“You should think very carefully about what you do next.”

The room went still again.

Richard laughed.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The attitude.”

Amara looked at him.

“Are you sure that word means what you think it means?”

His face reddened.

One executive whispered:

“Jesus.”

Richard stepped closer.

“You're a janitor.”

Amara said nothing.

“Nobody in this room answers to you.”

She held his gaze.

That sentence would eventually become the most repeated line from the incident.

At that moment, it simply hung there.

Nobody in this room answers to you.

Amara looked around.

At the executives.

At HR.

At Finance.

At the woman holding the phone.

Then back at Richard.

Before she could answer, the glass conference-room doors opened.

Thomas Reed entered first.

Chief Legal Officer.

Fifty-six.

Gray suit.

Silver hair.

Expression unreadable.

Behind him came Elena Pierce, Chief Operating Officer.

Then Daniel Cho from security.

Then three members of the executive committee.

Richard turned.

Relief flashed across his face.

He apparently believed senior leadership would restore order.

“Thomas.”

Thomas did not look at him.

His eyes went directly to Amara.

Wet uniform.

Ice on the floor.

Water on the carpet.

Her hair dripping.

Thomas stopped.

Elena stopped beside him.

Her face changed instantly.

Not surprise.

Fury.

Richard started speaking.

“We had an issue with a contract worker.”

Nobody answered.
