Tessa stepped outward.

Luis blocked.

Chase tried closing the final side.

Tessa’s left hand touched the mat.

She nearly fell.

A beginner shouted:

“GO!”

Tessa laughed despite herself.

Then Chase caught both shoulders.

Marcus began counting.

“One!”

Tessa’s right foot was three feet from boundary.

“Two!”

Luis secured her hip.

“Three!”

Devin moved to block the final gap.

“Four!”

Tessa pushed—not against the men, but off the mat with her free foot—and rotated around Chase’s outside shoulder.

He tried following.

Luis lost his angle.

Devin reached.

Tessa stumbled.

Her right hand slapped down across the outer boundary line.

Buzzer.

Time:

0:53.

The room erupted.

Tessa stayed on all fours for two seconds.

Breathing hard.

Then rolled onto her back.

Stared at the ceiling.

Chase stood above her.

Hands on hips.

Breathing harder than he wanted anyone to notice.

Devin sat.

Luis laughed.

Not embarrassed.

Delighted.

Marcus walked over.

“Boundary.”

He pointed.

“She got it.”

Applause.

Tessa covered her face with both hands.

Not victory.

Exhaustion.

Chase looked down.

“All at once.”

Tessa moved one hand.

“You asked.”

He laughed.

Then offered his hand.

She took it.

He pulled her up.

No humiliation.

No black belts lying unconscious.

No secret death moves.

Three very good grapplers had underestimated a smaller opponent in a strange ruleset.

She had used the only advantage she really had.

They were three people trying to solve one problem without preparation.

She had spent years solving crowded wrestling scrambles.

That was enough.

Then Devin asked:

“Okay.”

He was still seated.

“What exactly are you?”

Tessa looked at him.

“Tired.”

Everyone laughed.

Luis said:

“No, seriously.”

Tessa reached for her water bottle.

“Physical therapist.”

Chase groaned.

“I hate you.”

Tessa smiled.

“Good.”

Marcus watched her.

Something in his expression said he wanted the longer answer.

Tessa did not give it.

Not yet.

The video appeared online the next morning.

Of course.

Forge had a media policy requiring consent for posting.

Someone posted anyway.

A teenager’s father.

Forty-three-second clip.

Started with Chase asking:

“Who do you want first?”

Then Tessa:

“All at once.”

Cut.

Three men moving.

Tessa escaping.

Final boundary touch.

Caption:

THREE BLACK BELTS LAUGHED AT THE WRONG WOMAN

Tessa saw it at 7:12 a.m. while drinking coffee.

She nearly choked.

Comments already growing.

She destroyed all three.

No.

That gym is fake.

No.

She must be special forces.

Absolutely not.

Black belts couldn’t hold one woman?

Under those rules, for fifty-three seconds, correct.

Size doesn’t matter when technique is real.

Dangerously wrong.

Size mattered tremendously.

If the goal had been three men restraining one woman without training restrictions, outcome different.

If striking existed, different.

If they had practiced coordination, different.

If Tessa had slipped once, different.

Context.

The internet hated context.

She texted Marcus.

Who posted this?

He replied almost immediately.

Working on it. Sorry.

Then:

Do you want us to issue correction?

Tessa thought.

Take down whatever you control. Don’t make a bigger thing.

Marcus:

Understood.

Then Chase messaged.

My mom sent me the video. I’m moving countries.

Tessa laughed.

Good plan.

Chase:

You could have warned us.

About what?

That you’re apparently a ninja octopus.
