The room had shifted.
She recognized the old social game.
New person.
Status unclear.
Pressure them lightly.
See what happens.
Nothing malicious.
But enough.
Marcus asked:
“Tessa, want to pick one?”
She stood.
Maybe she should have stayed seated.
Maybe moving cities had made her tired of always choosing the safest exit.
Maybe the old competitor in her wanted a problem.
Maybe she genuinely thought it would be fun.
All true.
She stepped toward the mat.
Chase smiled.
“Okay.”
He pointed.
“Who first?”
Tessa looked at him.
Then Devin.
Then Luis.
Three black belts.
Three different styles.
Three larger men.
The obvious answer was any one of them.
Instead:
“All at once.”
That was how the room went silent.
The timer started.
Tessa moved toward Chase.
Not away.
That choice created the first collision.
Chase had expected her to retreat from three people.
So had Devin.
So had Luis.
All three had mentally imagined the same picture:
Tessa backing up.
They spread.
Cutting exits.
Containment.
Instead, she attacked the largest gap before it fully existed.
Chase stepped forward to catch her.
Devin moved from Tessa’s right.
Luis from left.
Three good grapplers.
One problem.
They had never practiced together.
Chase reached first.
Tessa changed angle.
His hands made contact at her shoulders.
She did not fight the grip.
She moved with it.
That turned Chase’s body slightly across Devin’s path.
Devin had to stop.
Two seconds.
Luis adjusted.
Tessa stepped again.
Chase tried circling.
She used him as the center obstacle.
Not holding him.
Not hiding dramatically.
Simply keeping his body between herself and one of the others.
Marcus saw immediately.
His expression changed.
“She’s making lanes.”
A purple belt beside him whispered:
“What?”
Marcus pointed.
“They’re blocking each other.”
Chase realized too.
He released and moved sideways.
Tessa let him.
Devin entered.
Fast.
Tessa did not engage him fully.
She made contact.
Redirected.
Kept moving.
Luis almost reached her hips.
Tessa turned.
His hands brushed her waist.
She cleared.
Six seconds.
The crowd got louder.
Chase said:
“Spread.”
Good adjustment.
They separated.
Now Tessa had a real problem.
Chase center.
Devin right.
Luis left.
Three lanes.
No obvious path.
She bounced once.
Not nervous.
Reading.
Luis stepped.
Tessa feinted toward him.
He committed half a step.
She immediately turned toward Devin.
Devin rushed to close.
Tessa changed again.
Back toward Chase.
Chase had been waiting.
He caught her in a clinch.
Good.
Strong.
Tessa’s movement stopped.
The room cheered.
Luis came from one side.
Devin from the other.
This was probably over.
Tessa felt Chase’s control.
Not full pressure.
Enough.
Five-second count had not begun because the others needed secure contact too.
Tessa lowered her base.
Chase adjusted.
Luis reached for her arm.
Tessa rotated.
That movement pulled Chase across Luis’s angle.
Luis had to reset.
Devin grabbed Tessa’s other wrist.
Now two contacts.
Chase tried steering her back toward center.
Tessa went with him.
Then suddenly dropped her weight and changed direction.
Nothing explosive.
Chase followed automatically.
Devin’s grip stretched.
Released.
