“We should discuss this privately.”

“No.”

The nurse’s voice was steady.

“He grabbed me.”

The waiting room became silent.

The administrator looked toward patients.

“Lower your voice.”

“No.”

The nurse repeated:

“He grabbed me hard enough to leave bruises because I asked where the emergency assistance money went.”

The administrator whispered:

“You don’t understand what you are accusing him of.”

“That’s why I’m asking.”

“You have no proof.”

The nurse reached into her bag.

The boss stepped closer instinctively.

She gave him an irritated look.

“Paper.”

He relaxed.

She removed copied statements.

“These transfers.”

The administrator stared.

“Where did you get those?”

“Clinic accounting drive.”

“You had no authorization.”

“I was processing assistance forms.”

“Those documents are confidential.”

The nurse looked at her.

“Are they false?”

Silence.

The boss watched.

The administrator’s fear was not directed at him anymore.

It was directed at the documents.

The nurse understood too.

“You knew.”

The administrator shook her head.

“I knew there were questions.”

“What questions?”

“I can’t.”

The nurse laughed softly.

“You know what everybody keeps saying to me?”

The administrator stared.

“I can’t.”

“Don’t ask.”

“Not tonight.”

“You don’t understand.”

The nurse’s eyes hardened.

“I’m tired of sentences designed to protect the people who already know.”

The boss looked at her.

Something in those words reached him too.

The administrator sat.

Her shoulders dropped.

“The clinic would close.”

The nurse stared.

“What?”

“If the foundation withdrew support.”

The administrator looked around.

“We would be gone in sixty days.”

The nurse’s anger softened slightly.

“That doesn’t explain missing money.”

“The foundation controls the grants.”

“They decide what counts as community spending.”

“Consultants.”

“Outreach.”

“Administrative fees.”

The nurse pointed at the records.

“There are consulting firms receiving more than diabetic care.”

The administrator closed her eyes.

“I know.”

The nurse whispered:

“How long?”

“Years.”

The boss became still.

“Years?”

The administrator looked at him.

“You do not get to threaten me.”

“I haven’t.”

“You don’t have to.”

She turned toward the nurse.

“I complained once.”

“What happened?”

“My husband’s company lost three contracts within a month.”

The nurse stared.

“They made sure I understood.”

“Who?”

The administrator looked toward the boss.

Then whispered the chairman’s name.

The same one.

The boss’s jaw tightened.

The nurse looked at him immediately.

“No.”

He exhaled through his nose.

“I said nothing.”

“Your face did.”

The administrator stared between them.

“What exactly are you two doing?”

The nurse answered:

“Trying not to become the problem while proving one exists.”

The boss almost smiled.

The administrator looked confused.

The nurse gathered the papers.

“We need copies of everything.”

The administrator shook her head.

“I cannot give you access.”

“Then give it to regulators.”

Silence.
