The red ledger proves enough to protect you.
Burn it if you must.
Keep it if you are braver than I was.
Thomas.
Clara sat.
Silas finally asked:
“What?”
She handed him the letter.
He read.
His jaw tightened at Jonah’s name.
Jake stood in the doorway.
Clara looked at him.
No more partial truth.
Not after this.
She told him.
Everything.
Jake cried quietly.
Not like a child.
Like someone trying not to.
Silas sat across the room.
He did not approach until Jake looked toward him.
Then Silas moved beside the boy.
Jake asked:
“Did Dad suffer?”
Silas’s face went pale.
Clara wished he did not have to answer.
He did.
“I don’t know.”
Jake cried harder.
Silas finally put one hand on his shoulder.
The boy leaned into him.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But need.
Sometimes need came first.
They sent copies of the ledger to the county sheriff.
Silas insisted on sending another copy to the territorial marshal because local law had known Thomas too well.
Smart.
Three days later Edgar arrived.
Not alone.
Two men rode with him.
Clara stood on the porch holding the rifle.
Silas was beside the barn.
Jake inside.
Edgar dismounted.
He looked almost like Thomas around the eyes.
That disgusted Clara.
“Widow.”
“Edgar.”
“You have something that belongs to family.”
Clara raised the rifle slightly.
“This is my family’s land.”
Edgar smiled.
“Thomas made promises.”
“Thomas left a letter.”
The smile vanished.
Silas stepped into view.
Edgar recognized him immediately.
“Maddox.”
Clara looked between them.
Silas said:
“Been a while.”
“You know him?”
Clara asked.
Silas’s gaze remained on Edgar.
“Unfortunately.”
Another secret.
Clara nearly screamed.
Edgar laughed.
“He didn’t tell you?”
Silas said:
“Not now.”
Edgar looked delighted.
“Your giant protector used to run cattle with men who worked for me.”
Clara already knew pieces.
Not this piece.
Silas looked toward her.
“Two jobs.”
Edgar continued.
“He helped move stolen herds.”
Silas did not deny it.
Edgar smiled.
“You keep choosing remarkable men, Clara.”
That was calculated.
It worked.
The old wound opened.
Thomas.
Silas.
Men with hidden histories.
Silas said:
“Difference is I’m standing here telling the truth now.”
Edgar’s face changed.
“Give me the ledger.”
Clara asked:
“So you can burn it?”
“So I can protect Thomas’s name.”
Clara laughed.
“Thomas’s name does not deserve protection.”
Edgar looked furious.
“He gave you everything.”
“He bought me.”
Silence.
Even Edgar had no answer.
Clara continued.
“He stole from Jonah.”
“You killed Jonah.”
Edgar reached toward his coat.
Silas drew first.
“Don’t.”
Edgar froze.
Silas’s revolver was steady.
