He wondered when the HOA President would attempt to misuse it.

Apparently Saturday.

He asked:

“Is that the inspection order for the association pool?”

The HOA President froze.

The Officer looked at her.

The homeowner continued:

“The one issued because your pool deck is structurally unsafe?”

The gathering neighbors murmured.

Several parents looked toward the HOA President.

The woman with the cooler lowered it.

The HOA President recovered quickly.

“The order establishes broader recreational authority.”

“No.”

“It allows emergency access.”

“To association property.”

“The neighborhood association has temporary rights—”

“To its own pool.”

“Stop twisting words!”

The homeowner looked at the bodycam again.

“I’m not twisting anything.”

The Officer’s radio crackled.

He ignored it.

The homeowner heard only fragments.

Unit number.

Supervisor.

Respond.

The Officer touched the radio.

“Busy.”

Static.

Then:

“Confirm location.”

The Officer gave the street.

The homeowner raised his eyebrows.

The HOA President whispered:

“Why are they asking?”

The Officer did not answer.

The radio crackled again.

“Remain on scene.”

The Officer’s posture changed.

Small.

But unmistakable.

The homeowner noticed a vehicle turning onto the street.

Dark county SUV.

Gold stripe.

Sheriff markings.

No siren.

Lights initially off.

Then red and blue illuminated as it approached.

The gathered residents moved aside.

The HOA President stared.

The Officer whispered something under his breath.

The SUV stopped near the gate.

Driver door opened.

A County Sheriff stepped out.

Older.

Calm.

Tan uniform.

No hurry.

That was more intimidating than shouting would have been.

A second county deputy remained near the vehicle.

The Sheriff looked at the Officer.

Then at the HOA President.

Then at the homeowner behind the gate.

Finally at the keys in the Officer’s hand.

“Step away from the gate.”

The Officer’s shoulders stiffened.

“Sheriff, I’m handling—”

“Step away.”

The Officer obeyed.

Two steps.

The Sheriff approached.

“Those keys yours?”

The Officer looked down.

“No.”

The Sheriff held out one hand.

The Officer hesitated.

The Sheriff waited.

The keys were placed in his palm.

He examined them.

Then looked toward the homeowner.

“Yours?”

“Yes.”

“How were they obtained?”

“Taken from the lockbox.”

The Sheriff turned toward the Officer.

“Did you access that box?”
