That was enough.

The homeowner stayed with his brother that night.

When he returned, nothing was damaged.

But the pattern changed.

For the next eight days, no dumping occurred.

The HOA President sent him three violation notices.

Pool maintenance.

Fence appearance.

Exterior camera placement.

The last one made him laugh.

She claimed his hidden security equipment might violate neighborhood aesthetics.

He responded:

Please identify the device and its location.

No answer came.

She could not.

Because the hidden camera was invisible from outside.

Then, on day twenty-eight, garbage returned.

This time the bag was thrown over the fence.

The camera caught only a gloved hand.

Day twenty-nine.

Another bag.

Day thirty began differently.

The homeowner woke before sunrise.

He had barely slept.

Something about the pattern told him whoever was doing this was becoming reckless.

He had cleaned the pool the previous afternoon.

By 6:00 a.m., the water was clear.

By 7:00, he changed into dark burgundy swim trunks and went outside.

Not to swim.

To wait.

He carried his phone.

A towel.

Nothing else.

The detective had told him not to confront anyone.

He intended to listen.

He sat beneath the patio roof.

8:12.

Nothing.

8:38.

A gate closed somewhere beyond the fence.

8:44.

He heard footsteps.

Not behind his yard.

Along the side path.

Then the side gate handle moved.

The homeowner stood.

The new lock opened.

That should have been impossible.

Unless someone had obtained the replacement code.

The gate swung inward.

The HOA President stepped through.

The homeowner's body went completely still.

She wore oversized black sunglasses, pearl earrings, and a bright pink floral satin robe tied tightly around her waist.

In both hands, she carried a large black trash bag.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

The HOA President froze.

The homeowner raised his phone.

Recording.

Her face changed.

Then something astonishing happened.

She recovered.

Almost instantly.

"What are you doing out here?"

The homeowner stared.

"My backyard."

She tightened her grip on the bag.

"I came to speak with you."

"Carrying garbage?"

Her jaw tightened.

"It's not what you think."

The homeowner lifted the phone higher.

"Thirty days."

She stared.

"Thirty days of trash."

The President's voice dropped.

"Put the phone down."

"No."

"This is HOA business."

The homeowner almost laughed.

"Dumping garbage in my pool is HOA business?"

She stepped closer.

"Turn that off."

He stayed where he was.

"Open the bag."

Her expression changed.
