Her hand moved to the counter.
He continued:
“I opened the first one.”
Silence.
The Regional Director looked down.
The Founder hated reveals like this.
They turned truth into theater.
But sometimes theatre had already been built before he arrived.
He simply stepped into the light.
The Second Cashier whispered:
“You’re…”
The Founder nodded.
“Yes.”
The Blonde Cashier shook her head.
“No.”
He almost smiled.
“That seems to be your favorite answer.”
Her eyes filled with panic.
“You’re the founder.”
“Yes.”
The room reacted quietly.
One person gasped.
Someone near the entrance whispered:
“I knew it.”
They had not.
The Founder looked toward the customers.
“This should not matter.”
People stared.
He continued:
“The person you saw at that table should not need to own the company for what happened to be wrong.”
That ended the spectacle.
He turned toward the Regional Director.
“Close the register for fifteen minutes.”
The Director nodded.
The Blonde Cashier immediately said:
“You’re shutting us down?”
“No.”
The Founder looked around.
“I’m stopping service long enough to understand what happened.”
A few customers began gathering their things.
The Founder raised one hand.
“Anyone who has an order waiting gets it.”
“No one is being asked to leave.”
The irony was deliberate.
The Blonde Cashier heard it.
So did everyone else.
The Regional Director handled refunds for customers who could not wait.
Then locked new orders.
The front door remained open.
The Founder walked to the back office.
Regional Director followed.
The Blonde Cashier.
Second Cashier.
The younger employee from dishwashing.
The Founder asked her to come too.
She looked terrified.
Inside the small office, there were only three chairs.
The Founder remained standing.
Nobody knew what to do.
Finally he said:
“I want the cameras preserved.”
The Regional Director nodded.
“Already texted operations.”
“Good.”
“Register transaction logs.”
“Yes.”
“Employee schedule.”
“Yes.”
“Customer complaint history for this location.”
The Blonde Cashier spoke.
“You’re firing us.”
The Founder looked at her.
“I haven’t decided anything.”
She almost laughed.
“You came undercover.”
“No.”
“You dressed like that.”
He looked at his jacket.
“These are my clothes.”
“You wanted us to fail.”
The Founder shook his head.
“No.”
“I wanted the complaints to be wrong.”
That silenced her.
He continued:
“I visited nineteen stores before this one.”
“You’re the first location where I heard staff openly discussing customers.”
The Second Cashier looked down.
The Founder turned toward the younger employee.
“You saw what happened.”
She nodded.
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
Her eyes immediately filled.
The Blonde Cashier looked at her.
The Founder noticed.
“Look at me.”
The young employee did.
“Why?”
She whispered:
“I need this job.”
The room changed.
The Founder said nothing for several seconds.
