Police arrived first.

Then paramedics.

Then men in expensive coats who carried themselves differently from everyone else.

They did not wear uniforms.

They did not shout.

They simply appeared, spread through the alley, and began watching rooftops, doors, windows, and exits.

Claire understood immediately that they were not police.

She also understood that the child in her arms was not an ordinary child.

One man came around the corner faster than the others.

Tall.

Broad shoulders.

Dark hair touched with silver at the temples.

Charcoal suit.

White shirt open at the collar.

His face was controlled until he saw Sofia.

Then the control disappeared.

“Sofia.”

He crossed the alley.

The child stiffened.

The man dropped to one knee.

“Baby.”

His hands were shaking.

That surprised Claire.

Everything about him suggested a man who had spent his entire adult life ensuring that his hands never shook.

“Daddy.”

Sofia’s voice broke.

He reached toward her.

Sofia turned away.

She wrapped both arms around Claire’s neck.

“Mummy.”

Claire blinked.

The father froze.

One of the paramedics looked up.

Sofia squeezed harder.

“Mummy.”

“No, sweetheart.”

Claire’s voice came out weak.

“I’m Claire.”

Sofia shook her head.

“Mummy.”

The man stared at Claire’s face.

Not the blood.

Not the uniform.

Her face.

His expression changed slowly.

His eyes moved over Claire’s dark hair, pale skin, green-gray eyes, and the shape of her mouth.

Then Claire’s torn collar shifted.

A silver necklace slipped into view.

A small pendant hung from it.

Half a circle.

A tiny star engraved into the metal.

The man stopped breathing for a second.

“Where did you get that?”

Claire instinctively covered the pendant.

“What?”

“The necklace.”

“My mother.”

“What was her name?”

The question came so abruptly that Claire frowned.

A paramedic stepped between them.

“Sir, she needs treatment.”

The man barely looked at him.

“What was your mother’s name?”

Claire felt the alley tilting.

“Rachel Bennett.”

The man’s face emptied.

“What did you say?”

“Rachel Bennett.”

His eyes locked onto hers.

“Did she ever use another surname?”

Claire laughed weakly.

“She was my mother.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Claire’s temper survived even when the rest of her body was failing.

“And getting shot didn’t suddenly make me obligated to answer strangers.”

Something almost like surprise crossed his face.

Then he looked at the blood soaking her sleeve.

His voice softened immediately.

“Hospital first.”

The paramedics lifted Claire onto the stretcher.

Sofia screamed.

“No!”

Her father reached for her.

“Come to me.”

“No!”

Sofia grabbed Claire.

“Mummy!”

Claire winced when the child caught her injured shoulder.

The man gently moved Sofia’s hand.

“You’re hurting her.”

Sofia instantly looked horrified.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

Claire tried to smile.

Sofia stared at the necklace again.

Then pointed.

“She has Mommy’s necklace.”

Claire looked at the child.

“What?”

The man closed his eyes briefly.

When they reopened, grief had replaced shock.
