The young banker looked down.
The Chairman noticed him.
"You."
The banker looked up.
"Sir?"
"Were you handling the transaction?"
"Initially."
"Did you verify the check?"
"I was opening the verification system when the Manager took it."
The Chairman's eyes moved toward the Manager.
"You stopped verification?"
She swallowed.
"I believed immediate action was required."
The Chief Compliance Officer looked at the torn pieces.
"Immediate destruction?"
The Manager's face flushed.
"I was protecting the bank."
Evelyn finally spoke.
"She used that phrase several times."
The Chairman looked at his wife.
Evelyn continued.
"She also said women like me shouldn't walk into places like this expecting questions to disappear."
The Regional President's face changed.
The lobby stayed silent.
The Manager stepped forward.
"That isn't what I meant."
Evelyn looked at her.
"What did you mean?"
The same question she had asked minutes earlier.
The Manager could not answer.
The Chairman's anger became visible, but he controlled it.
He looked toward the security guards.
"Did she ask you to remove my wife?"
The white guard nodded.
"Yes, sir."
"Physically?"
"Yes."
"Did you?"
"No."
"Why?"
The Black Security Officer answered.
"She wasn't threatening anyone, sir."
The Chairman nodded.
"Good."
The Manager spoke quickly.
"Sir, I didn't know who she was."
The Chairman turned toward her.
The sentence changed everything.
Not because it helped her.
Because it revealed the problem.
"You didn't know who she was."
The Manager nodded desperately.
"Exactly."
The Chairman stared.
"And that makes this better?"
She stopped.
The Chairman stepped closer.
"You think the issue is that you destroyed the CEO's check."
The Manager's eyes widened.
Several employees gasped.
Until that moment, some had understood only that Evelyn was the Chairman's wife.
Now they learned something else.
The CEO.
Evelyn was not simply connected to the organization.
She ran it.
The Manager's knees seemed to weaken.
The Chairman continued.
"The issue is that you believed you were entitled to treat any customer this way."
The Manager looked toward Evelyn.
"I'm sorry."
Evelyn remained calm.
"Why?"
The Manager blinked.
"What?"
"Why are you sorry?"
"For what happened."
"What happened?"
The Manager looked around.
