Rachel elbowed him.

“What?”

“This isn't a biker rally.”

“Could be.”

Afterward, Mateo hugged them.

Hammer handed him an envelope.

“No.”

Mateo stared.

“Not another mysterious dead-person box.”

Hammer laughed.

“Open it.”

Inside was the title to the black Harley.

Mateo looked up.

“No.”

Hammer shrugged.

“I'm too old.”

“You rode it here.”

“Technicality.”

“I can't take this.”

“You already ruined it once.”

“That's not how gifts work.”

Hammer looked toward Rachel.

“Help me.”

She smiled.

“You're on your own.”

Hammer pointed at Mateo.

“Your father helped me rebuild that engine twenty years ago.”

Mateo stopped.

“What?”

Hammer nodded.

“Before you were born.”

“That bike?”

“Same frame.”

“Different motor pieces now.”

“Luis helped build the original.”

Mateo stared at the title.

Rachel had not known either.

Hammer continued.

“I should've told you sooner.”

Mateo looked at him.

“Why didn't you?”

Hammer smiled.

“Apparently I have a problem with timing.”

Rachel laughed so hard she cried.

Mateo accepted the Harley.

He did not ride it immediately.

Of course.

He took it apart.

Every major component.

Inspected.

Cleaned.

Rebuilt.

Rachel visited his garage six months later.

The black tank sat on a work stand.

Freshly polished.

Mateo held a wrench.

“You know what I found?”

“What?”

“Milk residue.”

Rachel stared.

“After all these years?”

“In one corner under the tank seam.”

He smiled.

“You almost destroyed it.”

“I was nine.”

“I know.”

Mateo looked toward the bike.

“I used to think that was the worst thing I ever did.”

Rachel leaned against the workbench.

“What do you think now?”

He considered.

“Probably still top ten.”

She laughed.

Then he became serious.

“If I hadn't poured that milk…”

Rachel knew.

“No box.”

“Maybe.”

“No investigation.”

“Maybe.”

“No truth.”

Rachel stepped closer.

“Don't do that.”

“What?”

“Turn the worst day into destiny.”

He frowned.

“That isn't what I meant.”

“I know.”

“But listen.”

She touched the black tank.

“Your father left evidence.”

“Hammer kept it.”

“Naomi protected it.”

“Investigators worked it.”

“People told the truth eventually.”

“You pouring milk happened to start the chain.”

“That doesn't mean you were responsible for solving your father's death at nine years old.”

Mateo looked down.

Rachel continued.

“You were a scared child.”

“You did something destructive because you thought it would make the world safe.”

He looked at her.

“And Hammer could've humiliated you.”

“He didn't.”

“That part mattered.”

Mateo nodded.
