This was not merely vandalism.

She was constructing a second story.

One for witnesses.

One where the broken window became background and he became the problem.

He stopped moving.

The HOA President kept backing away.

Then her hand disappeared behind one side of her large handbag.

The Homeowner watched.

She pulled out another landscaping rock.

Smaller.

Similar gray stone.

For a second, he thought she might throw that one too.

Instead, she dropped it directly beside his shoes.

The rock bounced once.

Several neighbors gasped.

The Homeowner looked down.

Then slowly back at her.

The HOA President pointed.

“There.”

He stared.

She turned toward the neighbors.

“He came outside holding that.”

The Homeowner said nothing.

The woman with the phone near the next driveway lowered it slightly in disbelief.

The HOA President continued.

“He threatened me.”

The Homeowner finally spoke.

“You just dropped that.”

“I saw you pick it up.”

“No.”

“You were angry.”

“No.”

“You approached me aggressively.”

“No.”

She pulled out her phone.

“I’m calling the police.”

The Homeowner nodded.

“Please do.”

That answer bothered her.

She had expected resistance.

“What?”

“Call them.”

The Homeowner stepped backward toward the porch.

“Tell them exactly what happened.”

The HOA President hesitated.

Then dialed.

He watched her.

She turned enough that the neighbors could hear.

“Yes, I need police.”

Pause.

“A homeowner is threatening me.”

Pause.

“Yes, he has a rock.”

The Homeowner looked down at the stone beside his shoes.

His jaw tightened.

The HOA President continued.

“He became aggressive after I attempted to discuss violations.”

The Homeowner almost interrupted.

Then stopped himself.

Let her talk.

Every sentence was becoming evidence.

She gave the address.

Then lowered the phone.

“There.”

The Homeowner nodded.

“Good.”

Her confidence returned.

“You should go inside.”

“No.”

“I’m giving you an opportunity to calm down.”

He stared at her.

“You smashed my window.”

She folded her arms.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because you did it.”

“Prove it.”

The word landed differently.

The Homeowner’s eyes moved briefly toward the porch roof.

The HOA President followed his gaze.

Nothing obvious was there.

The security camera built into the porch trim was small.

She apparently knew about it because she had complained previously that the installation violated exterior aesthetics.

But she did not know everything about it.

The Homeowner looked back at her.

“You really want proof?”

She smiled.

That smile contained a confidence he found strange.

“Yes.”

He pulled out his phone.

Tapped the home-security application.

The HOA President watched.

For half a second, uncertainty crossed her face.

Then nothing happened.

The Homeowner frowned.

The front camera feed loaded.

A spinning icon.

Then an error message.

LOCAL CAMERA OFFLINE.
