The woman shook her head.

“No.”

The officer blinked.

“No?”

“You’re taking his word over mine.”

“We checked his identification.”

“He could be lying.”

“About the address printed on state identification?”

“People commit fraud.”

The Female Officer stared for a moment.

The Black Homeowner said quietly:

“This is getting ridiculous.”

The White Woman turned sharply.

“Don’t you speak to me like that.”

The Female Officer raised one hand.

“Everybody calm down.”

The Black Homeowner sighed.

He looked at his watch again.

2:49.

His phone began vibrating on the porch table.

He glanced toward it.

The Male Officer noticed.

“Is that yours?”

“Yes.”

“Leave it for now.”

The Black Homeowner nodded.

Then the White Woman said:

“He’s getting agitated.”

He stared at her.

The Female Officer looked between them.

“He’s standing still.”

“I can see his body language.”

The Black Homeowner actually laughed then.

One short disbelieving breath.

The White Woman pointed.

“There.”

“That.”

“That attitude.”

The Male Officer stepped closer to the Black Homeowner.

“Sir, keep it calm.”

The Black Homeowner looked at him.

“I am calm.”

“Good.”

“Stay that way.”

Something in the tone irritated him.

Not enough to react.

But enough to notice.

He had spent decades around rank, authority, and rules.

He knew the difference between instruction and assumption.

The Male Officer was beginning to treat calmness as something conditional.

Something the Black Homeowner had to prove continuously.

The Black Homeowner said:

“My identification matches the house.”

The officer answered:

“We’re still sorting it out.”

“Fine.”

“Then what exactly am I suspected of?”

The Male Officer hesitated.

The White Woman answered:

“Trespassing.”

The Black Homeowner looked at her.

“I wasn’t asking you.”

The Female Officer stepped between their lines of sight.

“Sir, we’re just trying to verify.”

“Then verify.”

“I am.”

The Black Homeowner nodded.

“Okay.”

His phone vibrated again.

Then again.

The older neighbor said:

“You all know this man is supposed to leave soon, right?”

The Black Homeowner looked toward him.

He had forgotten the neighbor knew about the ceremony.

The White Woman asked:

“Leave for what?”

The Black Homeowner answered:

“None of your business.”

That offended her immediately.

“You see?”

she said.

“This is what I’m talking about.”

The Male Officer exhaled.

“Sir, I need you to keep your hands where I can see them.”

The Black Homeowner looked down.

Both hands were visible.

One held nothing.

The other had been near his hip after adjusting his shirt.

He raised them slightly.

“Here.”
