The Black Homeowner nodded.

“Yes.”

The White Woman rolled her eyes.

“Of course.”

That word landed differently.

The Black Homeowner noticed.

So did the neighbor.

Neither responded.

Sirens sounded faintly in the distance.

The Black Homeowner closed his eyes for one second.

Not because he feared police automatically.

Because the entire thing had become absurdly larger than it needed to be.

He had plans that afternoon.

Important plans.

At three thirty he was supposed to leave for a formal veterans recognition ceremony downtown.

He had spent twenty-eight years in uniform before retiring.

Most people in the neighborhood did not know much about that life.

He preferred it that way.

His house was where he was simply a man trying to keep weeds out of flower beds.

He looked at his watch.

2:41 p.m.

Plenty of time.

Probably.

The first patrol car turned onto the street.

The White Woman’s posture changed immediately.

She stepped closer to the curb.

The Black Homeowner did not move.

The patrol car stopped partly in front of the driveway.

A Female Officer stepped out.

Early thirties.

Dark hair pulled back.

Professional expression.

Her hand rested near her belt, not on a weapon.

A second patrol car arrived behind her.

A Male Officer stepped out.

White.

Late thirties.

The White Woman walked toward them before either had finished surveying the scene.

“That’s him.”

The Female Officer looked past her.

The Black Homeowner stood beside the hedge.

Gloves tucked under one arm.

The older neighbor remained near the sidewalk.

The Female Officer raised one hand.

“Sir, stay where you are.”

The Black Homeowner nodded.

“I’m staying.”

The White Woman began talking rapidly.

“I called because I saw him going around the property with tools.”

“He was near the side gate.”

“He told me he lives here, but I know that isn’t true.”

The Black Homeowner stared.

The Female Officer asked:

“Ma’am, let me speak.”

The woman stopped reluctantly.

The officer walked several steps toward the Black Homeowner.

“Sir, can you tell me what’s going on?”

He gestured toward the trimmer.

“I was doing yard work.”

“This is your residence?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have identification?”

“In my wallet.”

“Where’s the wallet?”

“Back right pocket.”

“Slowly.”

The Black Homeowner reached carefully.

Pulled out his wallet.

Held up his license.

The Female Officer took it.

Looked at the address.

Then at the house number.

Then back.

The White Woman stepped closer.

“That doesn’t prove ownership.”

The Female Officer looked at her.

“Please give us space.”

“But he could have changed the address.”

The Male Officer moved toward her.

“Ma’am.”

She stopped.

The Black Homeowner looked at the Female Officer.

“You can check property records.”

“We may.”

She looked at his license again.

“Do you have keys to the house?”

He lifted one hand.

Keys clipped to his belt loop.

She nodded.

“Anyone else inside?”
