Unknown numbers.

One text from his husband:

Call me now.

The doctor closed his eyes.

He had forgotten.

He called.

The answer came immediately.

“Where are you?”

“At Central.”

“What happened?”

“I’m okay.”

“That is not an answer.”

The doctor looked toward the glass.

“A runner collapsed.”

“You stopped?”

“Yes.”

“Then?”

He hesitated.

His husband heard it.

“What happened?”

“Police misunderstood.”

Silence.

“How badly?”

“I got hit once.”

Another silence.

Then:

“By a car?”

The doctor almost smiled.

“No.”

The realization came.

“A cop hit you?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“I told you.”

“I’m coming.”

“You’re working.”

“I was working.”

The call ended.

The doctor stared at the phone.

The senior paramedic smiled faintly.

“You’re in trouble.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Twenty minutes later, the police captain arrived at the hospital.

She was a Black woman in her late forties wearing a command uniform beneath a winter coat.

She entered the emergency department without entourage.

The doctor recognized her from city emergency-management meetings.

She stopped three feet away.

Her eyes went immediately to his swollen cheek.

“Doctor.”

“Captain.”

“I’m here because one of my officers reported force used against you.”

“One officer?”

“The younger one.”

The doctor filed that away.

The captain continued.

“I need to ask whether you require medical treatment.”

“I work in an emergency department.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

He almost smiled.

“No significant injury.”

“I would still like documentation.”

“It’s already documented.”

“Good.”

The captain’s shoulders relaxed slightly.

“Then I need to tell you something before anybody else does.”

The doctor waited.

“The lead officer has been relieved from field duty pending review.”

He felt nothing.

That surprised him.

No satisfaction.

No anger.

Only exhaustion.

The captain continued.

“Both body-camera recordings are secured.”

“A civilian video has also been provided.”

“Dispatch audio preserved.”

“Witness names collected.”

The doctor nodded.

She studied him.

“You expected me to defend him.”

The doctor met her eyes.

“I expected nothing.”

“That may be worse.”

“Probably.”

The captain looked toward the resuscitation area.

“The runner?”

“Alive.”

Her face softened.

“Thank God.”

“Maybe.”

She understood.

Too early.

The captain said:

“I know this is a medical environment and you need to work.”
