Confusion.

Then irritation.

“What are you talking about?”

The Woman looked at him.

“Nothing.”

The Sergeant grabbed her other wrist.

“Your word against mine.”

That sentence landed differently.

The younger Officer heard it.

The Woman heard it.

And somewhere, dozens of miles away, so would people who had been listening since the stop began.

The Woman said:

“Say that again.”

The Sergeant smiled.

“Your word against mine.”

Her expression finally changed.

A tiny smile.

Not triumphant.

Certain.

The Sergeant saw it.

“What?”

She looked toward the interstate behind the patrol SUV.

Three black vehicles were approaching along the shoulder.

Fast.

No emergency lights.

Dark tinted windows.

The first passed several civilian cars.

Then slowed.

The Sergeant looked over.

The Woman’s smile disappeared.

“Too late.”

The first black SUV stopped behind the patrol vehicle.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Doors opened almost together.

Men and women in plain clothes stepped out.

Federal credentials appeared.

Large gold letters on dark vests.

DEA.

The younger Officer took one involuntary step backward.

The Sergeant released one of the Woman’s wrists.

“What the hell?”

A Senior DEA Agent approached holding a tablet.

Another agent moved toward the Sergeant’s patrol vehicle.

Two more stopped near the Woman.

The Sergeant still held the evidence bag.

He looked from the agents to the Woman.

Then toward the car.

The Senior DEA Agent stopped six feet away.

“Sergeant.”

The Sergeant’s voice changed.

Defensive.

“This is an active narcotics stop.”

The DEA Agent looked at the bag.

Then at the Woman.

Then back.

“Yes.”

“We know.”

The Sergeant frowned.

“How?”

The Agent turned the tablet around.

Video played.

Crystal clear.

Inside the sedan.

Interior camera.

Timestamp.

Audio.

The Sergeant’s hand reaching into his own vest pocket.

His fingers removing the small clear bag.

His glance toward the younger Officer.

His hand lowering beneath the passenger seat.

His fingers releasing it.

Then withdrawing.

The Sergeant stopped breathing.

The younger Officer stared.

The Woman slowly straightened.

Removed her hands from the roof.

One DEA Agent stepped between her and the Sergeant.

The Senior Agent replayed the clip.

Once.

No need.

The Sergeant’s face drained.

“That’s…”

He stopped.

The Senior Agent looked at him.

“What?”

The Sergeant stared at the screen.

“That’s not what happened.”

The Agent tilted the tablet.

“You want to watch it again?”

The Sergeant looked at the Woman.

“Who are you?”

The Woman adjusted the collar of her white top.

Then rubbed the wrist he had twisted.

She did not answer.

The Senior DEA Agent did.

“She is the executive director of the company running an active federal integrity program.”

The Sergeant’s eyes widened.

“What?”
