The Black Woman noticed the police SUV twelve miles before it stopped her.

She noticed most things.

Cars that stayed behind her through two lane changes.

People who looked at her too long at gas stations.

The exact moment a room stopped listening and began judging.

Those habits had nothing to do with fear.

They had been built by work.

Years of negotiating contracts.

Walking into boardrooms.

Entering cities alone.

Traveling between offices.

Learning that attention was often cheaper than repairing a mistake afterward.

She glanced into the rearview mirror.

Dark police SUV.

Blue-and-red light bar.

Two uniformed silhouettes.

Still behind her.

She maintained sixty-eight miles per hour.

The posted limit was seventy.

Her dark graphite sedan moved smoothly along Interstate 85 toward Atlanta.

The morning was bright.

Clear.

Heavy traffic but flowing.

She had left Charlotte before sunrise and expected to reach the Atlanta office before eleven.

Her phone remained connected to the vehicle but silenced.

Laptop secured inside a coded case in the trunk.

No reason to hurry.

No reason to worry.

Then the police lights activated.

Red.

Blue.

Fast flashes against the mirror.

The Woman looked at the speedometer again.

Sixty-eight.

She immediately signaled.

Moved toward the shoulder.

Continued until enough pavement opened beyond the guardrail.

Stopped.

Shifted into park.

Engine running.

Both hands visible.

She did not reach for anything.

Behind her, the police SUV stopped at an angle.

Driver’s door opened.

A Senior Police Officer stepped out.

White.

Early forties.

Large build.

Short hair.

Dark uniform.

Heavy belt.

He approached the driver’s side slowly.

The Woman watched him in the side mirror.

A second, younger officer remained near the patrol vehicle.

That interested her.

The Senior Officer stopped beside her window.

She lowered it halfway.

“Morning.”

His voice was flat.

“Driver’s license.”

The Woman looked at him.

“Good morning, Officer.”

“License.”

“My wallet is inside my handbag on the passenger seat.”

“Get it.”

She moved slowly.

The Officer leaned forward.

Eyes searching the car.

Luxury interior.

Black leather.

Clean console.

Small camera mounted near the rearview mirror.

Another nearly invisible lens near the passenger-side pillar.

He did not appear to notice either.

The Woman removed her wallet.

Presented the license.

The Officer took it.

Looked.

Then looked at her.

Then back at the license.

“Where you headed?”

“Atlanta.”

“From?”

“Charlotte.”

“What for?”

“Work.”

The Officer glanced inside again.

“What kind?”

“Business.”

His mouth shifted.

“Everybody does business.”

The Woman remained quiet.

The Officer looked at her clothing.

The sculpted white sleeveless top.

Sharp folded collar.

Wide black trousers.

Gold earrings.

Gold cuff bracelet.
