Security guard asking if he was delivering something at his own office.

Luxury store worker following him.

Minor events.

Mostly.

Accumulated.

His wife asked:

“What did you do?”

“Sat there.”

“And?”

“Apparently that was suspicious.”

She exhaled.

“You want me to come home?”

“No.”

“Sure?”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the meeting team.

“Actually this may become useful.”

“That sounds like you.”

“What does that mean?”

“You process feelings by building workflows.”

He almost laughed.

“I hate when you’re accurate.”

“Call me later.”

“I will.”

He hung up.

The suited professional-standards director sat across the table.

“She okay?”

“Yes.”

Then she asked:

“Are you?”

The homeowner started to say yes.

Stopped.

“No.”

The room quieted.

He continued:

“I’m angry.”

“Embarrassed.”

“And annoyed that I’m embarrassed because I didn’t do anything.”

The director nodded.

“That makes sense.”

He looked toward the front window.

The patrol cruiser had left.

The toy water gun remained on the brick post outside.

Bright.

Absurd.

He said:

“What bothers me is how many exits he had.”

The director leaned forward.

“Explain.”

“He had the name.”

“License.”

“Address.”

“Dispatch confirmation.”

“Nothing illegal.”

“Every new fact made the original call weaker.”

“He kept adding questions.”

The homeowner looked around the table.

“That is the failure I want the software to catch.”

One technical specialist frowned.

“Software can’t fix judgment.”

“No.”

The homeowner nodded.

“But systems can identify when the original basis has been resolved and escalation continues anyway.”

The silver-haired reviewer said:

“That sounds difficult.”

“It is.”

The homeowner stood.

Walked to a whiteboard.

Wrote:

ORIGINAL CONCERN

Below it:

NEW FACT

Below that:

REASSESS

Then:

CONTINUE / RESOLVE

He underlined the third word.

“Reassess.”

He turned.

“That step often isn’t formal enough.”

The director nodded slowly.

“Officers know how to escalate.”

“Call backup.”

“Detain.”

“Search under lawful basis.”

“Request supervisor.”

“Generate report.”

The homeowner pointed.

“But what is the formal action for ‘the reason we started is gone’?”

The silver-haired reviewer answered:

“Clear the call.”

“Yes.”

“But culturally?”

Silence.

The homeowner continued.

“Does stopping feel like success?”

Nobody answered.

“That’s the issue.”

He looked toward the porch.

“The officer today had every opportunity to say, ‘You live here. Call was mistaken. Have a good afternoon.’”

“He didn’t.”

“Why?”

The director said:

“Pride?”

“Maybe.”
