“They are part of your job.”

The rookie nodded.

His eyes were wet.

“Yes, sir.”

The arresting officer muttered:

“This is unbelievable.”

The Black man looked toward him.

“What part?”

The officer’s jaw tightened.

“You acting like everybody here is beneath you.”

The room went silent.

The Black man stood.

Slowly.

He was taller than most people in the room.

But his voice remained level.

“I never said that.”

The officer laughed bitterly.

“You don’t have to.”

The Black man stepped closer.

The chief had not arrived yet.

The commander watched carefully.

The Black man stopped several feet away.

“You decided I was pretending to be important.”

“I told you to verify me.”

“You decided that was arrogance.”

He pointed toward the booking computer.

“Your sergeant verified me.”

“Now you think verification itself is humiliation.”

The officer stared.

The Black man continued.

“You keep changing the problem because you cannot tolerate an answer that makes your original judgment wrong.”

The officer looked away.

The Black man sat again.

Nobody spoke.

Three dark SUVs arrived outside shortly after nine.

Their arrival made the station feel smaller.

The people who entered were not there to create spectacle.

That almost made them more intimidating.

Dark suits.

Credentials.

Technical staff.

One senior investigator approached the Black man first.

“Are you injured?”

“Bruising.”

“Medical documentation?”

“Not yet.”

“We recommend it.”

“Fine.”

The investigator turned toward the chief, who had arrived five minutes earlier.

“We require preservation of all relevant records.”

The chief nodded.

“Already underway.”

“Good.”

“Body camera?”

“Preserved.”

“Dash camera?”

“Yes.”

“Radio?”

“Yes.”

“CAD?”

“Yes.”

“Booking surveillance?”

“Yes.”

“Tow records?”

The chief looked toward the commander.

“Preserve them.”

The commander nodded.

The investigator looked toward the arresting officer.

“Is that him?”

The chief said:

“Yes.”

The investigator did not glare.

Did not threaten.

He simply looked.

Then:

“Chief, we’ll need him separated from all evidence-management systems associated with this incident.”

The arresting officer’s face changed.

The chief looked at him.

“Turn over your badge.”

The officer stared.

“What?”

“Badge.”

“Chief—”

“And duty weapon.”

“You can’t be serious.”

“I am.”

The officer looked around.

Nobody defended him.

The rookie looked at the floor.

The sergeant watched silently.

The arresting officer unclipped his badge.

Placed it on the desk.

Then removed his duty weapon and surrendered it according to procedure.

His hands shook slightly.

He looked toward the Black man.

“I was doing my job.”

The Black man said nothing.

The officer repeated:

“I was doing my job.”

The Black man finally answered.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.
