Lie.
“Paperwork?”
Excuse.
“Every time reality disagreed, she trusted the story more.”
His brother nodded slowly.
“And then?”
“Eventually you stop investigating.”
“You start manufacturing proof.”
That was what frightened him most.
Not ignorance.
Certainty protected from correction.
The Homeowner sold the house.
The new property had no HOA.
His brother joked that this was the greatest amenity.
The python’s new enclosure was larger.
Purpose-built.
Climate-controlled room attached to a secure exterior habitat.
The Homeowner planted trees.
Built a workshop.
Enjoyed silence.
Years later, a young relative visiting asked about the framed camera still hanging in his workshop.
It showed the old patio.
The HOA President crouched beside the stainless bowl.
The image was not displayed dramatically.
Small frame.
No caption.
“Who’s that?”
the child asked.
“Someone who made a very bad decision.”
“What happened?”
The Homeowner told a shortened version.
Woman thought he had a dog.
Entered without permission.
Put dangerous bait near the enclosure.
Discovered python.
Cameras recorded it.
Police handled the rest.
The child’s eyes widened.
“Did the snake scare her?”
“Yes.”
“Did it bite her?”
“No.”
“Chase her?”
“No.”
“Then what’s the cool part?”
The Homeowner laughed.
“The snake didn’t have to do anything.”
The child frowned.
He continued.
“She had already been caught by the truth.”
That line sounded more dramatic than he intended.
The child liked it.
Years later, when the python finally died from age-related illness, the Homeowner was devastated.
More than some people understood.
His brother came over.
They sat in the workshop.
No speeches.
After a while, his brother said:
“You had that animal longer than your marriage.”
The Homeowner looked at him.
“My marriage lasted four years.”
“Still technically true.”
He laughed despite grief.
The Homeowner chose private cremation through the veterinary service.
No dramatic memorial.
But he kept one photograph.
The python coiled beneath a branch in the original enclosure.
Taken a week before the HOA incident.
He placed it beside the old camera still.
Two images.
