The luxury SUV ended up completely off the traveled portion of the farm road, secured and immobilized beside the old oak, its rear end elevated high enough that all four wheels could no longer function normally.

From the roadway, it looked absurd.

Like the tree had decided to collect expensive vehicles.

The road was clear.

The Veterinarian stared.

Then looked at the Farm Owner.

“I’m not asking.”

“Good.”

They hurried to the barn.

The cow survived.

The calf did too.

Barely.

The Veterinarian finished near three in the morning.

The Farm Owner stood under the barn awning.

Rain had weakened.

The Veterinarian washed his hands.

“You know she’s going to lose her mind.”

The Farm Owner nodded.

“Yes.”

“Worth it?”

The Farm Owner looked toward the stall.

The newborn calf lay beside its mother.

“Yes.”

The Veterinarian smiled.

“I was hoping you’d say that.”

By sunrise, the storm had passed.

Sunlight spread across wet fields.

The white SUV remained beside the oak.

Mud coated the lower body.

No broken glass.

No visible body damage.

But its position was unforgettable.

The Farm Owner made coffee.

Then called the Sheriff’s office again.

This time he asked for the Sheriff personally.

They knew each other casually.

Small county.

The Sheriff answered.

“You all right?”

“Need you at the farm.”

“What happened?”

“Repeated trespass.”

Pause.

“And?”

The Farm Owner looked through the window toward the SUV.

“You should probably see the rest.”

The Sheriff sighed.

“I’ll be there.”

The HOA President arrived first.

The Farm Owner heard her before he saw her.

A smaller crossover raced down the subdivision access lane and stopped outside the gate.

The HOA President jumped out.

No polished outfit.

Jeans.

White blouse.

Sunglasses.

Hair pulled back.

She marched down the road.

Then saw the SUV.

Stopped.

Her entire body froze.

The Farm Owner stood beside the tractor.

Hands in the pockets of his overalls.

The HOA President stared upward.

Then screamed.

“WHAT DID YOU DO?”

The Farm Owner took a sip of coffee.

She ran toward the SUV.

Stopped beneath it.

Looked from the vehicle to the oak to the tractor.

“PUT IT DOWN!”

The Farm Owner remained still.

She turned.

“NOW!”

“No.”

Her face became red.

“That is a ninety-thousand-dollar vehicle!”

“Then you should be more careful where you leave it.”

“You touched my property!”

The Farm Owner raised an eyebrow.

The HOA President realized the irony too late.

“That is different!”

“How?”

“You have no right to move my SUV!”

“You had no right to park it on my farm.”

“I have access!”

“No.”

“The board voted.”

“The board can vote on your neighborhood.”

She pointed toward the SUV.

“GET YOUR TRACTOR.”

The Farm Owner looked at his coffee.

“Already used it.”

She stared.

“That isn’t funny.”

“I’m not joking.”

The HOA President pulled out her phone.

“I’m calling the police.”
