“What is that?”
Marcus glanced toward the gate.
“Not mine.”
Her face changed.
“What?”
Beyond the fence came the sound of engines.
Fast.
Multiple vehicles.
Victoria stepped backward.
“Did you call police?”
Marcus said nothing.
The alarm continued.
Tires crunched over gravel outside.
Doors slammed.
Voices.
“Federal agents!”
Victoria’s eyes widened.
Marcus kept filming.
Several plainclothes agents moved through the broken side gate.
FBI identification visible.
Agent Torres entered first.
She saw Victoria.
Saw the cutters.
Saw the sack.
Saw the pool.
Her face became unreadable.
“Ma’am.”
Victoria stepped back again.
“What is this?”
Torres raised one hand.
“Stay where you are.”
“This is private HOA business.”
Marcus almost winced.
Torres looked at him.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“Any contact?”
“No.”
“Threats?”
“Demanded my phone.”
Torres nodded.
Another agent photographed the broken lock.
Another moved toward the pool.
A third approached the contractor sack without touching it.
Victoria looked between them.
“You're FBI?”
Torres displayed credentials.
“Yes.”
“What is the FBI doing in his backyard?”
Torres answered carefully.
“This property is connected to an ongoing federal investigation.”
Victoria turned toward Marcus.
For the first time, she looked truly frightened.
“You set me up.”
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“I slept in my own house.”
“You knew I was coming.”
“I suspected someone was coming.”
“You let me do this.”
Marcus stared.
“You cut my lock.”
“You carried broken glass onto my property.”
“You poured it into a pool where my family swims.”
He lowered his voice.
“Do not make me responsible for the choices you made while nobody was stopping you.”
Victoria's face went pale.
Then she did what frightened people often did.
She talked.
“You don't understand.”
Torres immediately said:
“Ma’am, stop.”
Victoria ignored her.
“This wasn’t supposed to hurt anyone.”
Marcus looked at the pool.
“Then what exactly was broken glass supposed to do?”
Victoria stopped.
Agent Torres stepped closer.
“Do not answer further questions until you understand your rights.”
Victoria finally looked at her.
“Am I under arrest?”
Torres said:
“At this moment, you're being detained while we secure the scene and coordinate with local authorities.”
Victoria glanced toward the broken gate.
Then the cameras.
Then Marcus.
The confidence she carried into the backyard had vanished.
But the most important sentence had already been recorded.
This wasn’t supposed to hurt anyone.
