My wife had been home for less than two minutes when the police cars pulled up behind her Porsche. The HOA president was already standing in our driveway, pointing at the car like it was stolen. She had just called 911 and reported a suspicious luxury vehicle connected to illegal business activity. My wife had not even turned the engine off yet. By the time she stepped out of the car, two patrol officers were already walking toward her. Karen stood off to the side with her arms crossed, looking completely satisfied with herself.
“That’s the vehicle,” she told the officers immediately. My wife looked confused. “I literally just got home.” One of the officers glanced at the Porsche, then at Karen, then back at my wife. “Ma’am,” he said, “we received a report about a suspicious vehicle possibly tied to illegal business activity inside the neighborhood.” My wife blinked. “Illegal business activity?” Karen stepped forward like she had been waiting for that moment. “I’m the HOA president,” she said confidently. “This vehicle has been operating here without proper registration or HOA approval.” My wife frowned. “It’s my personal car.” Karen shook her head immediately. “No, it isn’t.”

The officer looked slightly confused. Karen pointed at the Porsche. “That’s a Porsche 911 Turbo,” she said. “Those cars cost over two hundred thousand dollars. People don’t just drive those unless they’re running a business.” A few neighbors had already come outside. Some stood on their lawns watching. A couple of them were already filming. My wife stayed calm. “I’m not running a business,” she said. “I just drove home.” Karen let out a short laugh. “Well, that’s not what it looks like.” The officer rubbed the back of his neck. “Ma’am, do you have proof the vehicle belongs to you?” “Of course,” my wife said. But before she could reach for anything, Karen cut in again. “They’ve already ignored multiple HOA requests,” she added quickly. “And the husband here has been extremely hostile whenever the association tries to enforce rules.”
My wife turned toward the house. That was when she noticed me standing on the porch. I had been watching the entire thing. From the moment Karen started yelling, from the moment she dialed 911, from the moment the police pulled up behind my wife’s car. I walked down the driveway slowly. Karen saw me coming and rolled her eyes. “Oh, great,” she said. “Here comes the husband.” One of the officers looked at me. “Sir, do you live here?” “Yes.” He nodded toward the Porsche. “Is this vehicle yours or your wife’s?” “My wife’s.” Karen laughed. “That’s impossible,” she said loudly. “People like them don’t own cars like that.” The street went quiet. Even the officers looked uncomfortable.
