She said it sharply, indignantly, as if indignation were a form of evidence. That was the exact moment we all heard the sirens cutting through the chatter. Brenda’s expression changed from furious to smug, the look of a woman who believes the cavalry has been summoned for her personally. She lifted her chin. She adjusted her grip on the handlebars as if she were already presenting evidence to a court that would thank her. “Finally,” she declared. “Now we’ll get this sorted out. You’ll see what happens when people break the rules in my neighborhood.”

A patrol car rolled to the curb, lights still turning, the color washing over the streamers someone could still see through our side gate if they looked. Two officers stepped out and read the scene the way officers do, quickly, before anyone’s story can arrange it. A crying child. A furious woman clutching a bike. A semicircle of neighbors filming. My pulse steadied a little when I recognized one of them. Officer Martinez. I had seen him at community events, the National Night Out table, the school fundraiser where he had let David sit in the front seat of a parked cruiser and pretend to call in a lost dog. He was the sort of man who remembered names and did not enjoy being performed for.

“What’s going on here?” he asked. Calm. Firm. Already looking at David’s elbow, at the helmet on its side, at the hands still on the bike.

Brenda jumped in before anyone else could speak. “Officer, I caught this boy stealing a bicycle from another residence. When I confronted him, his father came out and threatened me. I was simply performing my duties as HOA president to keep our neighborhood safe.”

I inhaled slowly and kept my voice even, because even now the performance mattered. “Officer Martinez. Today is my son’s tenth birthday. That bike is his present from me. I have the receipt in my wallet. At least twenty people saw me give it to him this morning. This woman accosted my son without evidence, accused him of theft, and physically pushed him to the ground when he tried to explain.”

Martinez turned to her. “Ma’am, did you physically touch the child?”
