At her work, or at their house? She was thinking he obviously must have told her where she worked. A hospital somewhere in Los Angeles. She could have been. Again, what year was that? Where was she working? When did they get married? She did not know. She thought ’85 or ’86 or something like that. The detectives said they had just kind of picked this up. They did not know a lot about it. She could have been working in Hollywood, it sounded like, if that was where she was working. So she could have said okay, and gone and talked to her. Hey, if he is dating you, he keeps calling me. Why don’t you tell him to knock it off? Because she probably would have told him to knock it off. They asked if she would have called John. Oh, yeah. And she wanted to tell her, too. She wanted them both to know. If you are getting called. She was faintly remembering when Scott moved in with her in 1993. Sometime in ’93, because she met Scott in April of ’92, teaching DARE in Oregon. He moved down. In fact he may have moved down in ’92. ’92 or ’93. There was the big earthquake. No, when was the big earthquake? ’94. So she thought Scott might have moved in sometime in ’93.
It was a careful remembering, full of maybes. Hospital, not house. A conversation about phone calls, not a threat. One or two, not five. The detectives let it sit. They already knew a sharper version, and they had not put it on the table.
Digging further into that history, investigators found exactly how Stephanie learned about Sherri in the first place. At a birthday party she had thrown for John herself. After the engagement, she and John reportedly slept together again. After that, Sherri’s friends described a pattern. Stephanie showing up at the condo, asking John to wax a pair of water skis. Stephanie appearing at Sherri’s workplace in full uniform while John was not there. And according to a direct witness, Stephanie cornering Sherri and telling her plainly that if she could not have John, nobody would. None of that was in the room yet. But almost thirty minutes into the conversation, without being shown a single witness statement, Stephanie brought up a version of it herself.
They pressed, gently, on the house. She was not sure she had ever been there. If she went for something social, that would have been the only time. They knew she went to talk to her at the hospital regarding the issue with John. What was going to happen with this thing. But would that ever have followed to the house? Hey, you know what. She did not even know that she knew where they lived. That was what she was saying. If she knew where they lived and she had been there for something social, she would remember. She could not see how many times she saw her face to face. He lived on Roscoe. Did she ever see her there? She did not know. She may have seen her at his apartment on Roscoe. She may have met her there.
But she did not have any issues with her, right? No. Obviously, if he was dating her and dating Sherri, she probably said hey, pick, or something, back then. She could not say they ever screamed. He was a pretty mellow guy. She thought she was pretty mellow. She did not think they had some big huge blowup to say why they stopped dating. Even when she was dating him, she was probably going out with other guys and he was probably going out with other girls. Would she remember if Sherri snapped on her? Hey, man, it’s my man, leave him alone. That kind of stuff. Maybe that happened. Gosh. It had been so long. It was not ringing a bell. One was on the crew team, so they all did stuff together. After they graduated they went to weddings. But Sherri was not part of that circle. She did not even know how he met her. She did not know where he met her from. He may have told her. It was not ringing a bell. There were other people who knew other people, friends of everybody’s. She did not know what else to tell them.
Then they put the friends in the room without bringing the friends in. One of the concerns, looking at the notes, was that some of Sherri’s friends said she and Sherri were having a problem because of the John situation. She did not know who her friends were. Again, she did not recall if he told her where he met her. She did not even know who these friends were. A problem? Like she said, if she spoke to her, she would go out on a limb, and she did not even want to say she spoke to her five times, because that was probably not even true. She could not even remember. Did she meet him at her place? He lived on Roscoe for quite a while, but she could not tell them how long he lived on Roscoe.
The conversation had to move, because a room that stays on one denial too long starts to look like what it is. So they moved to the ordinary. Cars. What she drove. And then she had a Toyota. Some kind of a Toyota. A hatchback, but she forgot the name. Like a Corolla or a Tercel. A Tercel. Something like that. And then she had her truck. Did she ever have any problems with her cars? Anything in general. Car wrecks. Anything stolen. No. Her car had never been stolen. Crashed. Hit and run. Her Tercel was hit and run. She had pictures of the hit-and-runs. She did not think any of her cars had ever been stolen. Broken into? Oh, yeah. Her cars had been broken into. Did she ever lose anything? Yeah. Now that they mentioned it. She had a gun that was stolen. She had other stuff that was stolen. Not her duty gun. That was good. Was it ever recovered? She did not know. She did not think so. Not that she knew of. Never been notified. Her car had been broken into several times. Where did that happen, when the gun was taken? She was trying to remember. She was sure they must know. Her car was broken into in Ventura. She thought in Santa Monica. She had relatives in Santa Monica and Venice. An uncle. She had several uncles. Could have been Santa Monica. Venice. Her car had been broken into in Ventura before.
