“Finally.”

“But I want you to state clearly what you’re ordering.”

That irritated him again.

“On your knees.”

The gas station seemed to go quiet.

The Black Woman looked at him.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

He pointed toward the concrete beside the SUV.

“Down.”

The Black Woman did not move.

The Officer stepped closer.

“ON YOUR KNEES.”

One customer whispered:

“Jesus.”

The Black Woman removed her sunglasses.

Folded them.

Placed them carefully on the hood of the SUV.

Then she lowered herself.

One knee.

Then the other.

Rough concrete beneath expensive boots.

Hands raised.

Back straight.

Head level.

She did not look humiliated.

That made the Officer angrier.

“Hands behind your head.”

She interlocked her fingers.

“Good.”

He moved behind her.

The Black Woman could hear his breathing.

Fast.

Excited.

Not scared.

That bothered her.

The Officer kicked her handbag away from where it had slipped near the open passenger door.

The bag skidded across the concrete.

A wallet partly slid free.

The Black Woman saw it.

“Do not damage my property.”

The Officer grabbed her right wrist.

“You're in no position to make demands.”

He pulled her hand down behind her back.

Then the left.

The first cuff clicked.

Then the second.

Too tight.

She felt the metal bite immediately.

“Loosen the cuffs.”

“Stop moving.”

“I am completely still.”

“Then they won’t bother you.”

“They are improperly tightened.”

The Officer leaned close.

“You people always have instructions.”

The Black Woman’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But something inside her cooled.

“What people?”

He hesitated.

Then:

“People who think rules don’t apply to them.”

She nodded once.

“Understood.”

The Officer reached for her upper arm.

She spoke before he could pull.

“Check the identification.”

“I told you I don’t care who you think you are.”

“You should.”

The Officer laughed.

“You threatening me?”

“No.”

She looked straight ahead.

“You’re about to understand why verification matters.”

The Officer grabbed her hoodie near the shoulder.

“Stand up.”

She rose carefully.

The cuffs pulled painfully against her wrists.

Behind the convenience-store windows, the cashier had stopped working entirely.

Everyone was watching.

The Officer turned the Black Woman toward the patrol car.

Then another siren approached.

Fast.

The Officer glanced toward the entrance.

A second patrol SUV swung into the station.

Braked hard.

A younger officer jumped out.

He looked from the first Officer to the Black Woman in cuffs.

Then to the people recording.

“What happened?”

The first Officer answered immediately.

“Possible burglary suspect.”

The Younger Officer frowned.

“Here?”

“Matches description.”

“What description?”

“Black female, dark clothing, leaving commercial zone.”
