The first officer nodded.

Reasonable.

The second looked toward the security guard.

“Cameras?”

The manager spoke quickly.

“Yes, but footage requires corporate authorization.”

The young man looked at her.

Again.

Why keep saying that?

The first officer asked:

“Can you access footage?”

The security guard hesitated.

“I can view active feeds.”

“Recorded?”

“Manager authorization.”

All eyes moved toward the Boutique Manager.

She folded her arms.

“I don't want internal security footage distributed.”

The officer frowned.

“No one's asking you to distribute it.”

The young man said:

“Just view it.”

The manager snapped:

“This is my investigation.”

The police officer looked at her strangely.

“No, ma’am.”

“It isn't.”

Silence.

The young man almost smiled.

The manager became flustered.

“I mean store investigation.”

The officer turned toward the young man.

“Sir, would you consent to checking your pockets?”

“No.”

The manager scoffed.

“There.”

The young man looked at her.

“There what?”

“If you had nothing to hide—”

The police officer interrupted.

“Ma’am, declining a search isn't proof.”

She fell silent.

The young man gave the officer a small nod.

“Thank you.”

Then he looked toward the manager.

“You wanted police.”

“Now they're here.”

“Let's review the footage.”

Her face tightened.

“I already explained—”

A voice came from behind them.

“Stop.”

Everyone turned.

The Assistant Director was running down the marble staircase with a tablet held tightly against her chest.

She was normally composed.

Today she looked as though she had seen a ghost.

Her eyes moved from the two officers to the Boutique Manager.

Then toward the young Black man.

She stopped.

Her face went pale.

The manager frowned.

“What is it?”

The Assistant Director did not answer her.

Instead, she approached the young man.

“Sir.”

The respect in that one word changed the room.

The Boutique Manager noticed.

“So?”

She demanded.

The assistant turned toward the police.

“Please do not search him.”

The first officer raised an eyebrow.

“We weren't.”

The Assistant Director swallowed.

Then looked toward her manager.

“What did you do?”

The Boutique Manager stared.

“What are you talking about?”

The assistant turned the tablet around.

On the screen was an internal corporate communication released less than fifteen minutes earlier.

A photograph.

Same face.

Same short haircut.

Same small diamond earrings.

Different suit.

Beneath it:

MAJORITY OWNER BEGINS UNANNOUNCED FLAGSHIP OPERATIONS REVIEW

The Boutique Manager stopped breathing.

One customer audibly gasped.

The security guard looked from the screen to the young man.

Then laughed under his breath.

Not mockingly.

In disbelief.

The first Police Officer read the screen.

Then looked at the Black man.

“You own this place?”

The young man slipped his sunglasses into his cardigan pocket.

“Technically, I own fifty-eight percent of the parent company.”

No one spoke.

The Boutique Manager’s face went white.

The Assistant Director continued, voice shaking.
