Same manager.

Same internal language.

Client presentation inconsistent with brand profile.

The Black Owner stared at the phrase.

“Who wrote this?”

The Human Resources Counsel looked uneasy.

“Manager.”

“Inconsistent with brand profile.”

“Yes.”

“What does that mean?”

Nobody answered.

He pushed the tablet across the table.

“Tell me.”

Regional Operations said quietly:

“It appears she used it as a discretionary classification.”

“For what?”

“Customers she believed might disrupt the luxury environment.”

The owner sat back.

“What does a customer look like when they disrupt luxury by existing?”

Silence.

He hated silence when the answer was obvious.

The Assistant Director sat near the end of the table.

She had been invited reluctantly.

The owner turned toward her.

“You've worked here how long?”

“Four years.”

“Under her?”

“Three.”

“Have you seen this?”

She looked toward corporate counsel.

The owner noticed.

“Forget counsel for one minute.”

Counsel said:

“She may speak freely.”

The assistant swallowed.

“Yes.”

“How often?”

“Enough.”

“Define enough.”

She looked at her hands.

“Weekly.”

The Regional Executive looked shocked.

“Why wasn't this escalated?”

The assistant laughed bitterly.

Not amused.

“We tried.”

The room changed.

The Black Owner leaned forward.

“We?”

“Me.”

“Two floor supervisors.”

“Former security manager.”

“Several associates.”

“What happened?”

“Reports disappeared.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“You submitted them?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Internal ethics portal.”

The Compliance Director frowned.

“That portal routes outside store management.”

The assistant looked toward him.

“That’s what we thought.”

The owner immediately understood.

Someone above the manager had been protecting her.

This was bigger.

“Pull report logs.”

The Compliance Director typed.

Several minutes.

Then:

“We have submissions.”

“Where did they go?”

He looked confused.

“They were closed by regional review.”

The Regional Operations Executive went pale.

The Black Owner turned toward him.

“You?”

“No.”

“Who?”

The executive swallowed.

“My predecessor.”

“Where is he?”

“Corporate advisory.”

Of course.

Promotions often buried problems upward.

The owner looked toward counsel.

“Freeze his access.”

“Now?”

“Yes.”

“He’s at headquarters.”

“Then he can enjoy the surprise there.”

The investigation widened.

By early afternoon, the store had been closed temporarily.

A sign appeared outside:

PRIVATE EVENT

Technically true.

Inside, employees gathered in the fragrance gallery.

The Black Owner stood before them.
