“Sir?”

“Now.”

The Senior Officer’s eyes narrowed.

“On what basis?”

The Supervisor did not answer.

The Gate Agent reached for the phone.

Two airport security officers arrived several minutes later.

One man.

One woman.

Both in light-colored uniform shirts, dark trousers, radios, badges, and equipment belts.

The male officer looked first at the Senior Officer.

Then at the transfer case.

Then at the Airline Supervisor.

“What’s the problem?”

The Supervisor answered before the Senior Officer could.

“He refuses to comply with airline security procedures.”

The Senior Officer turned his head slowly.

“That is not accurate.”

The male Security Officer raised a hand.

“Let him finish.”

The Senior Officer fell silent.

The Supervisor continued.

“There is a verification issue with his travel status.”

“We asked him to step away.”

“He refused.”

The Security Officer looked toward the Senior Officer.

“Sir, I need you to come with us.”

“Where?”

“Away from the gate.”

“Why?”

“So airline staff can complete verification.”

The Senior Officer looked toward the transfer case.

“I cannot leave that transfer unattended.”

The female Security Officer said:

“There are staff here.”

“That is not the same responsibility.”

“Sir, we're not asking you to abandon anything.”

The Senior Officer looked at her.

“You’re asking me to physically leave the person I’m assigned to escort while nobody can explain the underlying issue.”

The woman hesitated.

The male officer did not.

“Come with us.”

The Senior Officer's voice hardened slightly.

“No.”

The male officer took a step closer.

“You need to understand something.”

The Senior Officer stared.

“I understand quite a lot.”

“Then understand that refusing lawful instructions can get you removed.”

The Senior Officer looked toward the officer’s hands.

Then his face.

“Are you ordering me removed from a ticketed flight?”

“If necessary.”

“Has the airline canceled my boarding authorization?”

The Supervisor said:

“Not yet.”

“Have I violated airport security?”

The Security Officer answered:

“We’re trying to determine that.”

“Based on what?”

No answer.

The Senior Officer looked around.

By then at least thirty people were watching.

Phones began coming out.

He hated that.

This was not supposed to become entertainment.

The young man in the transfer case deserved privacy.

Dignity.

Not a viral airport confrontation.

The Senior Officer lowered his voice.

“Can we resolve this without turning him into a spectacle?”

The female Security Officer looked toward the transfer case.

For the first time, her expression softened.

The Airline Supervisor interrupted.

“The spectacle is being created by refusal to comply.”

The Senior Officer’s face changed.

Only slightly.

“You need to be very careful with that sentence.”

The Supervisor folded his arms.

“Is that a threat?”

“No.”

“It’s advice.”

The male Security Officer reached toward the Senior Officer’s upper arm.

The Senior Officer looked down at the hand before it touched him.
