The teenager’s face fell.
The Little Girl said:
“Mom.”
Her mother shook her head.
“No.”
“Accountability doesn't mean humiliation.”
“But it does mean adults need to know what happened.”
The Biker glanced at the mother.
He liked that sentence.
The teenager reluctantly unlocked his phone.
He called his father.
The conversation was painful.
Short.
The father arrived twelve minutes later.
Work clothes.
Paint on one boot.
Confused until he saw the gathered people.
Then mortified.
The teenager explained again.
This time without defending himself.
The father listened.
Then asked the Little Girl’s mother whether medical costs resulted.
The mother said they did not know yet.
The father gave contact information.
No argument.
No minimization.
Then he turned toward his son.
“You stay.”
The teenager frowned.
“What?”
“Your run is over.”
“Dad—”
“You stay.”
The father pointed toward the scuffed crutch.
“You help until they're ready to leave.”
The Little Girl looked amused.
The teenager looked miserable.
The Biker smiled faintly.
Good father.
The clinic nurse came outside after receiving the call.
They were close enough that she simply walked down.
She examined the Little Girl.
The leg seemed fine.
Bruising likely.
No indication the repair had been damaged.
The mother finally breathed normally again.
The Little Girl climbed upright.
The Biker helped by placing both crutches where she directed.
He did not lift her.
The teenager watched.
The nurse asked:
“Ready?”
The Little Girl nodded.
She moved carefully.
Painful but possible.
The teenager exhaled.
The Biker saw it.
“You were worried.”
The teenager looked defensive.
Then gave up.
“Yeah.”
“Good.”
The teenager frowned.
“Good?”
“Means you’re paying attention now.”
The Little Girl began walking toward her mother’s car.
The Biker picked up the stuffed bunny from where she had temporarily placed it on the bench.
He brushed dirt from its ear.
The teenager noticed.
He asked:
“Can I do something?”
Everyone turned.
The Little Girl looked back.
The teenager pointed toward the bunny.
“The ear.”
A seam had opened slightly during the fall.
The Little Girl’s face changed.
She took the rabbit.
Inspected it.
The old repair had split.
“Oh.”
It was a small sound.
But the Biker recognized the difference.
The leg might be fine.
The scraped palm would heal.
